How good is it?

VR designs has been reinforced with designer Cameron Harris and the result is a revolutionary new operational war game 'Barbarossa' that plays like none other. It blends an advanced counter pushing engine with deep narrative, people management and in-depth semi-randomized decision systems.

How good is it?

Post by Duck Doc »

Played some intermittently after release and enjoyed my play but never really progressed much. Have had some time to devote to the game and the deeper I go the more impressed I am. In my current game as the Axis it is the first of November. Leningrad has fallen, Smolensk is toast, Kiev is ours and everybody is happy except the truck guy. Life should be good EXCEPT...

... for the 6-7 consecutive turns of mud. And for the substantial incursion west of Novgorod and southwest of the Valdai Hills through a totally tired out 16th Army! I have had to re-route 4th PG from Leningrad and re-base at Pskov to deal with the incursion. This PG will be sent south east when the incursion has been sealed but tempus fugit and it is getting bloody cold.

I was flabbergasted by the computer opponent's move. I have been very impressed with the way it has managed its defense. This has to be one of the best AI opponents in the business.

This game has so much. Need to manage trains and trucks, beans and bullets and fuel, fatigue and readiness, staff and command issues, weather and etc. and then have to deal with an AI which is ready to pounce when you stop to take a breath or a leak. I am so tired of playing 'whack'a'mole dealing with minor incursions when I have not been paying attention. I have to pay attention to both the forest and the trees. And I am still not playing on the hard setting.

I go days at a time at this game and it keeps getting better and better. I am indeed so impressed. This is as good as it gets.

End of fanboy rant. Thanks and carry on,

It's even better with this mod: A Little Mod

This mod is a clear "must have" It corrects lot of the superficial work of the designer.

I agree, the game is an outstanding wargame. It's a bit of a monster trying to tackle an Axis campaign, and I'm shocked the people managing the real operation didn't die from stress...

Also, it was very much worth picking up a physical copy of this -- the manual is high quality.
If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?
