Can't Init Font Error

Post by Grim.Reaper »

Not sure if support forum monitored anymore, but just purchased this game after reading it work on Windows 10. However, every time I start the game I receive an error saying it can't Init the Font. I have read some other posts where people have experienced the issue but really there was never a clear resolution. I did try the things mentioned, but doesn't work such as:

- Click on the opening screen
- Followed the instructions in Windows 10 testing post
- Closed all other applications before playing
- I saw a message about changing to Windows mode in Options screen, but I can't get far enough to get to Options screen
- Tried DxWnd
- Using the latest patch (as well as tried with older patches)
etc.

I have opened a ticket with support, but was hoping someone might have found the magic in correcting.

can't say i've ever come across it, but i'd guess it's an issue either related to updated to windows 10 and not a clean install, or this one, either way hope it sorts it, as not come across it myself while testing in on my windows 10 test pc, then again it was a clean install, and not a update from a previous windows 10 build, or older version of windows, so hopefully that's it but how to fix it is another issue tbh,

tm.asp?m=1508224

so hope the link and comments work for you

Thanks, not using WinAmp so likely not my issue. I have tried shutting down everything else and run it, no luck.

The only time I get this error is when I multitask while the game is initializing. It looks like you have already checked to see if some application is running in the background so that may not be it.

DXWnd or Options->Windows mode won't fix this. The error is trapped during initialization of the "Georgia" type font, so something is causing a conflict, like adobe or even if someone else is on your home network.
I can look deeper into this to see if i can make it go away, but try to find if there is some other application running that may be causing the conflict.

1. For giggles, make sure the Georgia Font is loaded on your machine. you can search "font" from control panel: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Fonts.
2. Check also if you have loaded any foreign language fonts.
3. Fiddle with "adjust clear type test" font setting

I'm running W10 latest ver. 1809 and except for the occasional incident when I start excel while it's initializing, it's always run fine on both my laptop and my PC with an AMD HD6800 video card.

What is the path and directory of your EDBTR installation?

Does Georgia.ttf exist in C:/windows/fonts/ directory?

It could also be your video card settings. Try setting your video to 1024x768.

I would hate to pull Alberto off of his patch work to hunt this down, especially since I have a feeling it has something to do with a program or internet running in the background.

Response to this issue from Harley back in 2009: "You cannot take the focus away from BTR while it initialises the game. Some apps will take over between the video and the game, and cause this issue. Nothing I can do about it."

I tweeked everything I could think of yesterday to get it to work. I modified switches, changed setting, etc.

I did find a way to get it to work. If I select the game and allow the opening video to play to at least halfway, the fonts will initialize. If I stop the video (by pressing the space bar) at any time before halfway, I always get the "can't init font" error. There must be something loading behind the scenes during the video that must load before one can exit the video. It is the strangest thing. I have not had to do this in Windows 7, but it does seem to work. I just hope this trick does not stop working in the near future.

Give a try to this: search for DAT folder and then rename VIDEO folder to No_VIDEO.

I did as you suggested. It works fine. I do not get the error message. Thanks. I hope the Grim.reaper reads this, and I hope it helps him.

Thanks....strangely, mine just starting working without me making any changes. Hopefully it stays that way.

Did you try any of the suggestions? namely search for DAT folder and then rename the VIDEO folder to No_VIDEO.

Please let us know what you have tried so we can eliminate unnecessary exercises in futility.

It appears that our programmer has fixed this issue and will be included in the final version of the patch. At least I can no longer get it to fire on the test machines.

I just purchased the download version of this game. Went to run and got this same error message, Changed DAT file to No-Video. No luck. Checked for updates and updated to V1.04. Same issue. Windows 10 machine.

Any thoughts?

Strange....I ran it as administrator and had no issue with "Couldn't init font"

New issue though.....only a few of the Preference buttons (displayed vertically on the right of the screen) appear.....am I missing something?

No, I'm not sure why this would be happening with 1.04. Try as I may I can not get that error to fire anymore.
