John III Lament
John III is one of the good guys. He's been a Kansas City Chiefs fan most of his life. So he's stuck with them through good times and bad. The past twenty years have been pretty rough, with the Chiefs doing some notable things in the manner of failing to win home playoff games. They broke through last week and won a big game. No doubt John was on top of the world. So last night's game was particularly cruel. I hope John can bring himself back to the forum today to be cheered by the company of his comrades in arms.

RE: John III Lament
Funnily enough given that we are doing a PBEM, it has come up throughout the season that John is a passionate Chiefs fan, whereas I am a Patriots fan. Real life mirrors our game: I am the evil empire and he is the young upstart. I told him no turn yesterday as it would be devoted to football and the game between our two teams. Needless to say, I was very happy with the outcome, but I'm sure he must be a bit devastated. Last night was a bit of a back-and-forth heartburner for both teams. I screamed more than once and multiple times out loud said, "We've lost..." If not for a neutral zone infraction correctly called (and perhaps some other bad officiating by the officials such as the non-hit on Brady), the Chiefs would be in the Superbowl. The same can be said for the Saints.
I wrote this to John this morning with my turn:

Interesting two games of football yesterday marred by some bad officiating. The no call in the Rams-Steelers at the end of was crazy. Regarding the Patriots-Chiefs, tough back-and-forth game that made me have a heart attack multiple times screaming out loud. Close and I'm sure Mahomes will be back there again next year.

We live in the KC metro. Sick to our stomachs after the game last night. Feels like what happens when your high school team loses a big game. We're a small town feel here in KC.

That was nail biter to the very end. Even with the Pats up 14 at the half, you knew that wasn't going to be nearly enough.
With Mahomes in the pocket though, I think KC is gonna be a contender every year for a while. Amazing to watch him play. With a little more experience and a little more insight when to throw the ball away to avoid a sack, they are going to be amazingly tough to beat.

Deepest sympathy. [:(]
Andy Reid is now 1-5 in conference championship games. [8|]
He does many things well, but cannot win the big games.

You should never bet against Belichick/Brady in the playoffs.

At least neither team won (or lost) because of the worst offical non-call in the history of the NFL.
Corporate suits pulling strings to be the new Big Market team in the Super Bowl or just pure incompetience?
The whole official team should be bared from taking the field ever again.
(not to side track from John's disappointment -- just that it could be worse)

Well rabid bears, being rabid, are not normally in their right frame of mind. Don't share this with anyone but sometimes a resemble that observation.

I think Chiefs fans should take comfort thinking about 'the future'
I realize that there are personnel complexities - draft picks - salary cap issues - business of sports issues.
Partick Mahones and Andy R have a time horizon of 5 + years.
Tom Brady and Bill B - not so much.
Don't think Marty Shottenheimer comparison. Marty's best quarterback was Bernie Kosar for example (as I recall)
Think Dan Reeves / Mike Shannahan - Denver - John Elway. The Bronco's eventually got it 'right' for a couple of years after a number of disappointing Superbowl losses.

I was more thinking about being excellent coaches in the regular season but not so good in the playoffs.

Fair - and I understood.
But a coach also 'needs the horses to get it done' - quarterback primarily but a QB with a surrounding cast.
Marty gets a bad rep - great coach - bad playoffs - but look at his pivots..
Browns : Bernie Kosar
Chiefs :
- Yes he had Joe Montana for a year - but Joe was collecting social security by that time. Joe's best days were back in SF
- Elvis Grbac !! Enough said
Redskins
- 1 year
Chargers:
- He did have a young Drew Bree's in 2004 and didnt manage it - lost to the Patriots as I recall
- They had drafted Eli Manning - but flipped pick for young Phillip Rivers
- Doug Flutie
I would argue that Marty's coaching skill took 'incomplete teams' to the Playoffs - and the talent beat them.

I don't think it's as wide as some people think.
We have a lot of young guys on rookie contracts that are going to break the bank, and a couple of old vets with some nasty cap hits..
Ford, for example, is the most interesting. Absolute dog shit prior to contract year and never healthy. Contract year he's the best edge rusher in the league..
Look at all of the other teams that broke the bank with their QB salaries...
How many of the top 10 paid QBs made the playoffs this year? Exactly.
They're talking about $200 million for Mahomes. I am about as big of a Chiefs fan as you'll find. I've never ever given up on them, and never will. I like Mahomes, but no thank you.
Don't even get me started on baseball. $300 million each for Machado and Harper, you can have all of that you want. I'll build an entire minor league with that, and be successful for the next 25+ years. Ask Phillies fans how Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Jimmy Rollins contracts worked out. Or Reds on Homer Bailey. Orioles on Chris Davis.. I could go on and on. When guys have to get paid, it absolutely destroys a team in my opinion. The Dodgers have the 3rd highest payroll in baseball. When was the last time they won a WS? THIRTY YEARS AGO
I actually think our window is ridiculously short, but I am a very glass half empty kind of guy. NFL is weird. We were lucky we we're 100% healthy this year. Berry doesn't count. I actually think playing him playing in the Pats game wasn't a good thing. He took away snaps from Jordan Lucas who looks to have a bright future with us. He just isn't what he used to be, and the is he going to is he not going to play fucks with the other guy's minds who are preparing for his spot all week long.
We had the top offense going into the game, 100% healthy, yet our defense cost us the game again.
Remember 2003 playoffs? Exact same result. The zero punt game against the Colts
Defense and a run game ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS wins championships. You cannot make a single argument against that.
Pats game plan? Run the ball, and keep Mahomes off the field. No one else tried that this year. Once again, we're all playing cards, and Belichick has 6 cards. He is just that good. The Patriots entire organization should be studied for years to come for all businesses, sports teams, etc. The model of success.
There was talk before the Colts game that if we lost, Reid would of been shown the door. You can't do well in the regular season and then always fall on your face in the playoffs.
All I care about is getting rid of Sutton, everything else should work out.

Hey Dan,
I feel sorry for John, but I've grown to care not a whit about any particular pro team. The teams (aside from the Packers) have no allegiance to their cities, so I see no reason to holdany allegiance to them.
However, I am happy to note that both teams in "the big game" feature former Bulldog running backs, so that makes me happy.

NFL ? NFL Only ?
I would argue the point as I can think of numerous examples outside the NFL - in the NHL / NBA / CFL etc
However I do concur that the Packers are very unique among NFL team...
Having said that - they also played with the concept of a move - playing 4 home games a year in Milwaukee a number of years ago (circa 1980's) until the City came up with more money to refresh their stadium .. so not entirely different.

RE: John III Lament
I haven't watched a regular season NFL game in thirty years, and I've watched perhaps five playoff games during that same interval.
BUt John III is the real-McCoy - a lifelong fan of the Chiefs, who've been playing right there in Kansas City since the days of Len Dawson and Jan Stenereud. The Chiefs are one of those "small-market" teams that have played in the same place for a long time. People who a Chiefs fans are fans because they have some tie to the city, unlike the "shallow fans" fans who pick a perennial winner in a town they have no connection to.
Johns lived and died with his team since he was a yo9ung'n. That's what I meant by "he is one of the good guys."
