A Couple of Suggestions

Fury Games has now signed with Matrix Games, and we are working together on the next Strategic Command. Will use the Slitherine PBEM++ server for asynchronous multi-player.

A Couple of Suggestions

Post by canuckgamer »

I played the original Strategic Command Series many years ago and was thinking of buying War In Europe during the holiday sale but my credit card was hit with a couple of fraudulent charges early January and by the time I received my new card it was too late.
A friend of mine however did buy War In Europe and after checking it out over at his place I have a couple of suggestions.
Considering that the map and unit graphics have been re-done, how about some new sounds as they are exactly the same ones used in the old SC series.
Secondly, how about allowing air units to stack with ground units? Maybe put them on a "stick" so they are above the ground unit. An attack against that hex would choose whether it is attacking the ground or air unit. I also viewed the video on the product page and the Normandy invasion looks very cluttered because there is no stacking.
I get it that the low complexity of the game and that it is a strategic scale game means that some aspects such as naval warfare are abstracted but an air unit should not prevent a ground unit from being placed in a hex.

Yeah it does use the same sound effects as the original ~18 years ago. I especially was annoyed at Japanese tactical bombers having a Stuka Siren...

Good news is you can customize the sounds easily. They're all in the game's /sound/ subfolder and are simple .oggs, you can manipulate them in Goldwave or Audacity. I spent a few hours making my own sounds out of royalty-free stuff online. What's so funny is I came upon (I swear to you) the exact same audio clip of the Dive Bombers on some old sound effect website, only a longer playing version. I laughed.

This is what I made for Tactical Bombers, feel free to yoink it. I also shortened up the AAA fire because I felt it was way too long.

Some of the music I put on while playing this game would get certain of our European friends sent to prison.

On first blush the game seems to have low complexity but as one progresses in PBEM it is actually very complex. War in the East complex no but much different complexities and it is very difficult to master at PBEM. Given the range of the airforce, map size and number of units I can't recall a situation where I felt stacking was necessary. I agree the Naval game isn't the best but in the European game its down the list.

I only listen to the music/sounds the first time or two I play so I have no opinion.

enjoy the game.
