I know this has been posted before but here is the official USN report of the damage to HIJMS Kirishima inflicted by USS Washington. Just thought it might be neat to have both damage reports in the same thread for comparison.

Actually it's not some official USN report on the Kirishima. It's an essay by the author Robert Lundgren primarily making the arguement that a sketch by the Kirishima's Chief DCO of hit locations from USS Washingtons 16" shells is a better guide to what may have happened to the Kirishima than that stated in other Japanese accounts or in the "official" USN account (based mainly on Washington's AAR). If the sketch was correct, it doubles the number of 16" hits received by the Kirishima as recorded in previous accounts.

One thing I've noticed with many of these wreck discoveries is how, shortly after they go under, intact, from sustained flooding damage, one of the magazines then goes off. Yamato & Mushashi being 2 other notable examples.

this may happen if you did not flood your magazines. In case of flooding damage you don't think of adding more water to the ship, causing even more instability.
A different example is Bismarck, although it had not used much of its ammo nothing exploded due to being scuttled with water flooding into everything inside the hull. Magazines were very likely flooded first, being prepared for emergency flooding.
