I think Harbin has the aircraft factory. Nice bonus - congrats! [:)]

Decent day overall except that I forgot to turn off some Soviet bombers that got jumped. Cleanups going well at Haiphong, Harbin and the area around Tatung. A lot of stranded IJA units that I'll have to wear down slowly since I want to commit most troops forward to take advantage of openings and penetrations.
Kaifeng and Chengchow will be attacked in the next few days, and the IJA troops here have all been reduced and fatigued from previous combat, harassed by bombing, and have been moving and retreating. They should be messed up if I can pursue quickly.

Nov 10, 1942
A few troop softening strikes on the 10th, but this is mainly a ground focused turn. A lot of battles engaged and a few decided.
Haiphong capitulates. Bangkok does not.
At Tolun in the North the big Soviet army runs into a tough nut, getting only a 1:2, not dropping forts, and ending up with heavy disablements. We'll wait a bit to keep this one up, but it's useful tying down these troops in one spot. The two IJA tank divisions are still up here and not having an effect elsewhere which is very good.
I tried a DA at a longtime siege base Tsiatso North of Loyang. It unexpectedly fell easily after some IJA troops had moved out apparently. Nice. This opens a path for about 2k AV more Chinese units to enter the fray to the South. Once the Chinese have supply in this period it's all over unless the IJAAF can weaken them. There are so many units. Most of these have had a long chance to rest and rebuild as well, so they're slightly more experienced and larger, now also taking replacements from the inflowing supply.
Thebest action of the day was the Marine paratroopers taking Kiungshan on Hainan, destroying a base force and about 50 LB, FP and R planes in the process!! [&o]

RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A)
Great AAR obvert. I only started reading a few weeks ago but am now caught up.
Even without the Russian activation you've provided some great examples for allied "delay" missions in the first few months, then shown how that can quickly turn to offensive action.
I've particularly enjoyed watching the 10th Light Horse being in the thick of it in Malaya. I have no personal affiliation to them, but I have been reading up on the Australian Light Horse in WW1 a bit lately.
The 10th are faring better under your command than they did at the Nek in 1915!
I'm working on how to play as Japan, so this AAR suggests that the Japanese side should:
1. increase fighter production asap, especially Zero and Oscar to replace Claude and Nate.
2. Accelerate Tojos.
3. don't capture an oil field unless you can defend it against 4E bombers, eg: bring engineers, aviation support and a metric $h!tload of fighters for layered CAP
4. defend oil fields against naval bombardment (mines, coastal defence guns, etc)
5. improve ASW asap
Now to read Lowpe's side of this game over the next few weeks...
Cheers
Jim

The S-39 sneaks in next to Brunei and plants a fish into Shokaku! The third IJN CV within a month to take a torpedo. The KB is dancing with danger every day, and now that a lot of the ASW planes he's been flying were destroyed in Kiungshan my subs ver there have no DL. I think it's the right moment to tighten the net. All in.
The Dutch Cats with their 250kg bombs are picking up where the Dorniers left off, and nail another small TF near Manado.
The Chinese take Nanning. Only a rearguard there. Now a new flood of big rested Corps flows in from the North.

What is the KB doing here? Is it just using the fuel here since it's one of the last places the Japanese have that they can still access production?

The area around Canton/Hong Kong is getting congested. A lot of IJA units retreating into the big urban center. Smart move, but it also opens opportunities elsewhere. I'll aim to take coastal base soon, and then get supply into it. then, not too long in the future, I could build barges and invade Formosa on the cheap! [;)]
First though I'm sending units to fight for Chusien, near Hangchow. This base would give us a good foothold and possible aribase in the area.

Cheers
Jim

Thanks. Glad you're finding it useful. It is definitely an unusual game.
Your list is pretty accurate. Taking the oil enters too quickly, if the Allies have considered how to respond, can create problems.
The zero is vulnerable early due to it's low durability and lack of armor. It's still dominant, but if numbers go down and groups can't replace effectively, it can also be a problem. I've found upgrading and filling out groups on the fronts lines for Japan can be problematic if airfields have not been built up yet and supply is lower.
The key to the Singers defence, which was the turn in the game, was getting good fighters in there. I had numbers of P-40E, P-39D and various Hurricanes, but if the P-38E can hold the top CAP band and stay involved over multiple turns, then it poses real problems for Japan. With a CAP up and able to guard shipping, supply can be brought in, even reinforcements added, and the IJN can't just ignore the base operating nearby.
If he'd sacrificed enough planes, pilots and ships to knock the Singers fields back for a few days, it could have turned in the other direction. It would have been painful, but might have done it.
The other really big step was getting troops onto Sumatra relatively unopposed. I don't think he had any idea when they took Benkolen just how many were actually coming, and how the fall of that base (and a few others) could allow a complete steamrolling of the island. Since Java was still under our control as well it just multiplied.
I look back and wonder about the sacrificial bombardments at Bailikpapan and whether the Japanese actually could have come back from that, period. I lost the Repulse, had POW wounded, then overstepped with the CVs and lost the Enterprise and Lex, but still somehow came out holding key territory and thwarting further advances. Maybe just damaging that many IJN ships in the process combined with destroying so many A6M2 cascaded to the point where he didn't have the tools anymore to force quick step by step invasions and simultaneously stop the reinforcement of Singers and Sumatra.
It'll be an interesting post-game discussion, I think.

Tojo's go for Vlad and get smacked. MiGs just have an advantage over everything the Japanese can throw at them in 42.

Not much going on for the 17th. A good P-38E sweep of Canton netting a gaggle of Oscars, and a good DA at Hankow lowering forts to 3. On the 18th, however, I decide on a risky plan.
I’ve been watching the KB sit around Northern Borneo for a while and contemplating how to deal it a crippling blow without losing the rest of the Allied CV fleet. The Saratoga is still patching up damage from a previous clash in Singapore, and will need a good three weeks to fill the holes and upgrade air defences.
I decided to send in a limited surface force intended to disrupt and engage the KB many times in one night phase, hopefully getting some hits and forcing it into a sub net moving in to cut off easy escape. I used mainly older CL and fast DD in small TFs and tried to LR CAP as best I can. The first stage got within 1-3 hexes without engaging and without air strikes. I was almost sure there would be no big KB strike as he's so close to Singers and wouldn't want a sudden CAP trap to decimate the KB strike package. So now 3 DD TFs and one CL TF are sitting in awesome position for tomorrow and three more DD TFs with another fast CL TF will race in.
The CVs are out near Singkawang/Kuching for CAP and set I up the old R class as a lure for the KB to target. I figured with a lot of LBA from Singkawang, the bleeding CAP from the Allied CVs (300 fighters strong) and four big durable BBs, it’s possible a full KB strike could be really devastated and the BBs survive to limp back to Singers. Then the next turn I could load DB/TB from Singers and strike back with the CVs.
It’s a risk, but worth it since the KB is so close to such a major Allied base with a repair yard. If nothing else this could clear the way for the conquest of Northern Borneo.
The sub net closed to just outside ASW range from Borneo or the KB.
In other areas big sweeps went in to Canton and did well. These were mostly Brit and Canadian Hurris. Nice to see them succeeding against the low CAP there with Tojo’s in the mix.
Wuchang is on its’s last legs after the most recent DA, getting a 1:1 but dropping forts to 3. Hankow is also reeling after forts go to 2 in another 1:1. Lots more Commonwealth troops nearing the area and they’ll fill in soon.

Here is the air loss report for the day. The Hurris did some work. I'd swept with the P-38E last turn and did well, but this is unexpectedly good against a strengthened CAP.
The Kates were LBA, not launched from the KB, but the Vals were lost on patrol missions.

The KB is engaged!
The little DD TFs did get in there and even got some hits. In the first engagement I got to see the scope of this massive TF. It's apparently all of the IJN CVs in one flotilla. There aren't a lot of DDs, only five out of twenty ships, so the subs should be able to get in there too. He has one CA in there, the Mogami, and three CS cruisers, but also three CVE!![X(]
The small, old but quick USN DDs went in first, and got to 3k yards before King took a long lance and the DDs screening booted them out. CA Mikuma and a DD were detached and next tangled with three better USN DDs. Mahan, Smith Preston and Kushing then hit the big boys. They again got to 3k yards and put 2 hits on CV Hiyo. Cushing might not make it though.
Next the RN CLs found the KB and had a good long engagement. They got to 2k and got 7 hits on the Kaga and singles on four other CVs and a CVE.
Humpheys and Sands got in there, but didn't do much. They set the stage for the older USN CL and they got a few more good shots on a number of CVs, but in the end only light fires were burning. I don't think serious damage was done here, but it might prove decisive yet as the KB fled to the tip of Borneo and is surrounded by subs. One got a look at the CS cruisers but couldn't get a shot off before being sighted by escorts.
In other news a Soviet ID gets a bit mauled by a surprisingly large IJA stack near Kirin. While this is not good, and I should have been looking at recon more closely here, those IJA troops are a bit far forward for what I have planned. Since the rail is closed from Mutankiang by the troops at Yenki I've installed, these are he only reserves in the area for nearby Changchun. I'm sending a lot this way and up to Taonan. Winning either of those bases would make the Japanese position, with so many troops very forwardly placed, very precarious.
Bangkok finally looks ready to fall in the South, which will speed up troop movements from Singers.

Very interesting! Did he not have anything set to Naval Attack or did you manage to get far enough away?

RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A)
Here is a map of the current position after the turn. The KB had no strikes set, probably fearing a move in by the DS with max CAP up. I heard the CVs back obviously, but they are still out in range of a strike should a KB CV get hit by a sub or something. I don't know how with only 5-6 DD, and a lot of sub attacks, he is keeping them safe. There is a lot of ASW flying and about 2-3 subs a turn return to base, but I am cycling them back out quickly since I can repair at Singers, Saigon and Soerabaja.
Looking forward to the next few days to see what develops here.

RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A)
Here is SE China. Moving on Hong Kong now that Canton is heavily invested with 100k Chinese troops. I won't attack yet as the IJA have a large presence here too.
The main short term goal is Hangchow near Shanghai. Troops will converge on this area from the South and eventually from the North. Nanking is x4 terrain so I'll most likely wait on that.
It's strange to play two games that are now focusing on the same territory, but where I'm playing different sides, and in a totally different time period in game. I think I can learn from both.

Up in Manchuria the Soviets are busy isolating large portions of the Kwangtung Army in forward positions. A very large stack is now next to Mutankiang but due to the yellow roads won't be able to react in time to get to Taonan or Changchun.

After the series of KB interactions the 20th was a quiet turn on the seas. Subs searched and searched but couldn't track it through the Sulu Sea. It's near Mindanao after the turn.
The Akagi A6M group LR CAPed Samarinda, surprising some Dutch bombers with predictable results.
Up North the other wayward Soviet unit is punished by the large IJA stack outside Mutankiang. Inadvertently this provides an extra day fro marching troops to beat this stack to Changchun. In true Soviet style, the ends justifies the means.

Getting a lot of updating going today since I don't have a single turn from my three games to work on. [:(]
Got another unit eviserated when it accidentally was moved into Japanese held territory. This time it's a tank brigade which will move back now to Harbin to recoup. At least the IJA units are a bit forward and won't get back to Changchun or Taonan in time to defend those bases.
I also sacrificed a tank destroyer unit to open the river hexside into Hankow. It's done for a while but now troops will flood over into that base.

Nov 23-24, 1942
The KB is still hanging around the PI. The Allies now have access though to the bases on Western Borneo.
I'll load up the long awaited invasions of Brunei, Beaufort and Jesselton, send those in, and simultaneously get the Mindanao invasion and further relief and supply for Luzon moving. This period should solidify control of the Sulu Sea, South China sea up to Formosa, and open the approaches to the Central Pacific. I've got some ideas about that area now forming. [;)]
All moves ahead in the North, with Soviet units moving on Changchun and Taonan.
Some bombing runs are nailed by the Japanese in Northern China, but it's not too bad. I've been making the most of early war 1E and 2E airframes, and it's almost time to transition to more modern, defendable types.
On the 24th the big stack at Hankow reduces the forts to 1, gets a 1:1 but suffers some big losses. We'll get this base in the next week, but it's a bear.

The MiG-3 has gotten the Soviets through the first half year of the Tojo era. I'll start using them more aggressively now that the Soviets are on the offensive and the even better IJ airframes are on the near horizon. It doesn't make sense to save any MiGs to fight Georges and Jacks. Might as well use them now.
