Sharing Research

I've read in the manual that some countries can share research. How does this actually happen? As an example why does my increase in Inf Wpns level for the UK not automatically become available for Indian Army units? What am I missing?

What is shared is their progession, i.e. they help out each other's research through sharing their knowledge. This speeds up the research progress, but they aren't sharing the actual ability to upgrade to the next level, as no Major can do that without at least investing in it itself.

So it's more about sharing knowledge to speed research progress, rather than sharing freely the right to upgrade units.
