Can't move some USN/USMC units by road.

Post by afspret »

Any reason why I can't move USN Base Forces or USMC Def Bns by road? I set a USN Base Force to strategic mode and tried to move it by road from Noumea to Koumac but was told it wasn't allowed and also had the same issue when I tried the same thing with a USMC Def Bn. At first I thought it might have been a location issue, but the same thing happened when I tired to move other USN BFs by road from San Fran to Eureka and Seattle to Oak Harbor.

This isn't a Tech Support kind of problem, but where did you get the idea you could use strategic movement on a road? Use move mode.

USN and USMC ground units cannot use strategic movements over roads (games assumes not enough trucks, I think); only strategic by rail (like the Commonwealth, Chinese, and some other nationalities in game).

Yes, they have to put their boots on, lace them up, and walk.

I was fooled by that too - thinking ALL US units could strat move on a gray road. Alfred cuffed me about the ears a few times until I realized that Marine and navy units are expected to come in by sea and vehicles are not all that useful to them. So they are excluded from road strat movement.

IIRC this applies to some other units as well.

Us Naval units are a distinct Nationality separate from US Army unis.

Commonwealth units are also a distinct Nationality separate from British and Indian units.

US Army, British and Indian units can strat move on roads.

US Navy and Commonwealth units cannot strat move on roads.

Chinese units cannot strat move on roads.

I haven't yet tested Russiian units, but they are active in my current game and will run a test.

Although you cannot set any of the above-mentioned units that are unable to move by strat mode on roads to move on roads... You can set them to follow units that can and they will do so. E.g., if you have a US Army or British unit and set it to Strat move via road in the same hex as some Chinese units that are already packed, then the Chinese units can "tag along" if you use "Set all to march."

Most players probably view this as an exploit.

Thanks for the info Hans. Would be interested to hear if it applied to the Russians.
