Turn 9 - 19th December 1939

The Chinese are put under severe pressure. In the south the Japanese I Corps retreats - albeit without loss - but not before hitting the newly arrived Garrison to the north of the city, hard.

But east of Changsha CXV Corps suffers a 6 point reduction - for no loss to the Japanese - as the enemy once again shows an interest in this industrial centre.

Turn 9 - 19th December 1939

To the north the Japanese are pressing around Chengchow once more. A pincer attack was launched. To the northeast of the city, 42nd Army repulsed a massed attack by 3 Japanese armies and, although suffering casualties, incurred significantly more on the enemy. To the south the Japanese once again try and drive a wedge between Zhu and Xue's army groups. XXIII Corps was badly mauled and lucky to survive.

Further north still, 23rd Army is on the receiving end of an attack by a beefed up Japanese army.

Turn 10 - 5th January 1940

A New Year! But there is not much to be happy about if one is of the Allied persuasion.... at least the Axis raiders gave it a rest!

I get a message that German paratroopers are forming up in the Rhineland - great. Also the IRA are doing something or other...

Turn 10 - 5th January 1940

The French are asked if they want to form a Polish Corps at a cost of MPP. This is a no-brainer - I need bodies on the ground en Francais.

Turn 10 - 5th January 1940

So the first theatre I look at is China as this is where the action is centred for the moment at least. There are no reinforcements here this turn.

Around Nanning I bring units up to strength. I am worried by my lack of an army in this area.

Around Changsha I have a decision to make. Do I surrender the fortified hex vacated by the battered CXV Corps or do I continue to try and hold it? I decide to try and hold; 4th Army moves out of Changsha and takes up the position - II Corps moves into the city. III Corps remains in Hengyang and I bring two corps behind the lines up to strength.

Turn 10 - 5th January 1940

To the north I decide to move XII Corps north to hold the river line and try and dissuade the Japanese from moving further west. CXXX Corps moves up from reserve to Ichang to take its place. There are no more reserves....

Around Chengchow I can do no more than ask 42nd Army to stand firm - and hope that the punishment dished out to the enemy previously will stall further attacks this turn. I bring XXXI Corps up from reserve to plug the gap between Zhu and Xue's Army Group's. Sadly this unit can't quite reach the river to link with Xue's XII Corps.

Turn 10 - 5th January 1940

With Poland now gone and the game moving into 1940 I decide to look more closely at France. I don't know whether not researching with France was sensible but I guess only time will tell....

I receive a Garrison - which I place in the south as there is not much opposing Italy. I spend this turn moving units into position and so am unable to reinforce much. I spend MPP on the airforce and buy another Garrison.

I receive a destroyer and Dunkerque.

The British get two destroyers. I buy an engineer, upgrade my fighter unit and build up my tactical fighter strength.

Turn 11 - 19th January 1940

We'll start in Europe this time. Graziani is deployed by Italy apparently.

On the Western Front the Luftwaffe announce they are here by reducing my French fighter strength and reducing 9th Army on the border with Luxembourg. Unfriendly. But there is no further attack - no doubt due to the rubbish weather.

Meanwhile, in China, the Japanese reinforce a number of their units and this reduces the actually attacks. However, Changsha and Chengchow remain the main focus of Japanese attention. 4th Army, east of the former is badly smacked up (4 point reduction) and V Corps, south of Chengchow is down to strength 3....

Turn 12 - 2nd February 1940

The Allies have a decision to make about sending troops to aid Finland. This costs 150MPP (75 for each of Britain and France). There is a 50% of it working but those odds aren't great for that cost so I go with the historical approach and say No.

Turn 12 - 2nd February 1940

The Chinese seek to boost Infantry Weapons Research for 175MPP. I bring units up to the maximum I can (most are back to 10) but have to leave the fighters in a weakened state. I vacate Chengchow as I want to bring an Army south of the city to meet the growing threat here.

How's your match in WITPAE meanwhile?

I don't want so much to start another solo in Strat. Command, because it's higly addictive, only Human vs human.

Did you try Order of Battle? I have it , that's very good too (on a smaller scale), and if you have I'd be pleased to fire a match with you on it as well; Panzer Corps should be even better, but don't have it; MWIF is a bit too much for me now; this strat. comm. is a very successful simplified version of MWIF;

I have given up on WITP-AE. I have given all three of the GG monsters a shot now and have finally come to the conclusion that they are just not for me. It's not the complexity (MWIF is complex) - it's that I just don't enjoy the mechanics. As for Order of Battle - no. Last time I looked there were no NATO counters and that for me is a big fat NO.

Turn 12 - 2nd February 1940

The US Research ASW.

The British Research Advanced Fighters.

The French reinforce what they can.

Time to look a bit closer at where I am with Research.

The circles show what is currently being researched. Of course it's one thing to research and another to actually upgrade the units once the tech is available....

Turn 13 - 16th February 1940

Big shout out to the Chinese IV Corps. The defenders of Nanning continue their good work and not only stand strong - but they also continue to hurt their attackers.

For 4th and 41st Armies, guarding Changsha and Chengchow respectively, the turn was tough. Both are heavily reduced after concerted attacks from numerous units.

Big decisions to be made on whether to continue to try and hold or push back.

Turn 14 - 2nd March 1940

The French reinforce what they can.

I go for simply reinforcing all Chinese units and continue to hope they will hold despite the drop in experience this means. The only movement is in the south where CXX Corps moves to the river line on the right flank of IV Corps defending Nanning.

The South Africans get a Corps arrive but the Australians take a big hit thanks to a strike by coal workers. Thanks lads - good to see you are supporting the boys at the front.....

I use my MPP on upgrading as many naval units as I can.

I am asked if I want to upgrade Singapore at a cost of 200MPP. The problem for the RN is not the port - its having the ships to operate east of the Malay Barrier - I say NO to what I think would be a waste of money.
