Game stalls in "interturn" process

Post by larryfulkerson »

ORIGINAL: Hellen

Well, now that I have reached turn 30 ... the game seems to not want to finish the phase of "Checking Replacements: Axis" so that I can start turn 31. This is my third try at a starting my turn 31.

My first try, the game finished "checking replacements", then decided to show all objective paths (so that my screen was covered with the blue lines). It would not respond to clicking "begin Axis turn 31."

Second try: (reloaded my last saved game, let Elmer move again)....the second try: the game again froze during the "Checking Replacements: Axis". I waited for 30 minutes. "Not Responding." So, I killed the process via Task Manager.

THIRD TRY: this time, I reloaded my last saved game, set the map view to "2D TINY", turned off all sound ... and it seemed to be working well, no "black screens", no "freezing" during Elmer's move, I watched happily as he moved his little ant army. Even the railroad moves went smoothly across the map. The game froze during "checking replacements: Axis". I've been waiting a good 45 minutes, and the little progress bar is stuck halfway, with the message bar stating, "(Not Responding)".

Needless to say, it is disappointing to have to endure these reloads, fingers crossed, hoping that the game doesn't freeze. I'm not interested in going through all the "uninstall this", patch that, patch again, try Steam, etc. to get a game working.

For $60, I hoped to get at least a fairly stable game, especially considering that I purchased it LONG after it was released, and "patched".

So, cheers to you all, and I hope you enjoy your games. FWIW, I got to within 100 kilometers of Moscow.

I won't be back.

And, if Matrix reads this, I will NEVER AGAIN purchase another of your products. Have fun, everyone! Cheers!
I just thought somebody ought to see this.

I would say that he didn't wait long enough.

Well, who refuses to even consider taking steps to solve the problem can search the fault only be himself. It's not even clear if this is a game or scenario problem.
I mean, is it really so complicated or such a burden to re-install the latest version to ensure a flawless installation and get that off the list as possible source of the problem?

Anyhow, all these silly small step stones that the game had(remember all the guys with "There are so few scenarios!"?) ensure that in the end only the able persons stay and be a useful part of the TOAW community. I really can't understand how such clueless person thinks that it's a good idea to start with D21.
Gee I as old timer(played TOAW since the CoW version) started now more seriously with TOAWIV be doing Kolberg, and now I'm toying around with Fall Weiss since about a week and I haven't even done the first battles in the first turn.

I did. It was a learning experience. I learned a lot. And after I had gained a lot of experience and had learned a few things, I started another game. I did better the second time. A LOT better. D21 had been my favorite scenario for a long time now. Replaced by FITE2 recently. Too bad there's no PO for FITE2.

You have been around far too long for D21 to be your first game. [:D]

Okay, you caught me. My point is that choosing D21 as your first game isn't all that insane. Maybe it's HIS favorite scenario.
My first learning game was "Overlord '44" which I played as the Allies to the end and then played it from the German side. It was an
eye opener and I learned a lot. Reading the AAR's helped greatly. I learn something new all the time with this game. Sometimes I get
an itch to play WITP-AE as the Allies and I do that for awhile and when the itch goes away I come back to TOAW because it
has the right balance of detail and playability [ completely discounting the steep learning curve associated with game mechanics etc. ].
I'm completely discounting the learning curve because it appears to me that ALL complicated games have some kind of interface with the
player that can seem complicated upon first view. Expect it.
