Desert Fox 1941 installation problems

Post by Dukenfield »

I downloaded the digital Desert Fox 1941 and have installation problems.
The game installed files, but finished with these messages:
Could not move file (#3, Line3)
Could not move file (#3, Line6)
Could not move file (#3, Line9)

I started the game and the top two boxes (Start and delete game) are grayed out. I hit Start, get a request to save my game name, then get a steady stream of "Unable to load data xxxoob (a whole lot of these, all of which don't load).

Proceeding into the game, hitting the buttons bring up "Preferences" and "Encyclopedia", but nothing under any of the other buttons.

Obviously something is wrong. Any ideas for a fix?

Please reinstall the Mega Campaign. Do the following when you do reinstall. When the installation path comes up during the installation, you need to remove the space between Matrix Games(MatrixGames) then the installation should install in the correct path. Please let me know if this helps.

Just to add in this: The default path C:\Matrix Games\Steel Panthers World At War\MegaCam\The Desert Fox-41 is wrong install it to the path suggested below. This is the correct path C:\MatrixGames\Steel Panthers World at War Delete the space as Ross suggested between MatrixGames and everthing after War.

Thanks much - this worked like a charm. May be a good idea to post this for others who may run into the same problem.

Now on to the game...

Sorry Guys, but I bought the Lost victories download, and experienced exactly the same problem.

However the above fix with deleting the blank in Martix Games and removing the subdirectories after "war" does not help!

I even tried to rename the whole 7.1 installation path to MatrixGames before making an istallation, and still it did not work!

What to do?

IIRC I had the same problems installing some MC's.

I think the problem occurs if you do not install SP:WAW in the default directory. When you later install a MC, you are asked for your SP:WAW directory. That's when the problems start. It doesn't matter what you enter, the MC will be installed in a wrong directory. In my case the installation program created a new "root directory" in the MegaCam folder. So the MC was installed for example in D:\SPWAW\MegaCam\MatrixGames\SPWAW\Megacam\
I then had to move the folders into the right directories and all went fine.
Just look into your SPWAW Folder if the MC was installed into a wrong folder.

Autosave problem

Post by Dukenfield »

Here's my next problem. After finally getting the installation of Desert Fox done and playing five or six turns, life intruded and I had to go.
Since the game assured me it was autosaving, and asked me when I left if I wanted to autosave, I responded "Y".
Returning to the game, I have no save.
I've read the threads and saw the part about giving it 20 seconds or so. Is this my problem, or am I missing something else?
Ver 7.1 SPWAW (patched) installed, fresh install of DF. Game works great, just doesn't save in mid-game.

Thanks to all.

Desert Fox install

Post by grumblesa10 »

Tried all that. Still doesn't work.
I just don't have time or inclination to bit-twiddle to make an application work. If it ain't workin' outta the box, why bother.
Guess I'll get my money back.

What is the correct order to load the MC disks so that I don't run into problems? Thanks.

Randy: Try this for an answer http://www.matrixgames.com/default.asp? ... a8f7ea9c7e

It worked for most of us and a search of this forum brought it up.

Guys, I've had Desert Fox since it first came out (on CD) and I love it. I've re-installed it on my PCs at home over the years and have never had a problem as well as Lost Victories. However all of your issues with the Digital downloads have cause me to wait before I purchase War in the Pacific. Have patience this is an excellent product.

I rarely install any thing in the default directory without issues, but I have the CD not the Digital DL.

Please note these posts were from 2003. I've installed the new General's Edition without any problems.
