Problem with aircraft upgrade

I am in Jan 1943 of the campaign game. My USS Enterprise fighter squadron (VF-6) is down to
seven F4F-3A Wildcats. I have over 60 F4F-4 Wildcats in the pool in Noumea. The squadron is off
the ship in Noumea and I want to upgrade the squadron to F4F-4's. Upgrades are enabled but
the upgrade path for this squadron is set to F4F-3's. I no longer produce F4F-3's so that is
an impossible upgrade. Can I change this squadrons upgrade path to F4F-4's? I don't see a way
to do that.

Do you have player defined upgrades OFF in the scenario?
If yes, you need to get yourself some F4F-3s. Surely there are some groups using those somewhere in your forces. Upgrade them to the next airframe and free up some F4F-3. You don't need a full complement of airframes to upgrade if VF-6 is not scheduled to withdraw

Yes, I do have manual upgrades off. I found a couple of squadrons still flying F4F-3's that I can use.

FYI, this is not the same as player defined upgrades or PDU.

There is also the possibility you can upgrade directly to F4F-4 if you are willing to spend the PP required to change the upgrade path.

Also, if Noumea does not have the requisite size/supply/Air HQ parameters, the upgrade will not happen. Put the squadron back on the ship and the upgrade will happen, and you might even be able to change the squadron size too (click on the No Resize Allowed text and see what happens).
