Brimestone 2 as ASM

Post by Jwblack »

Setup a simple sortie of RAF Typhoons attacking a Modern Russian Frigate in the English Channel with Brimestone 2 missiles.. Each Typhoon can carry 6 missiles each. Three waves in groups of four on a sea level approach..

Russian Frigate has her Radars On.

So wave one got to launch range without detection ( 37 Miles), fired off 26 Brimestone 2's. a handful got thru, did little damage but took out a few sensors and mounts ( which is key)..

Wave Two, more missiles got thru, took out more sensors and caused some flooding.. Probably in real life vessel would head for home.

Wave Three, managed too get most missiles thru which caused a serious fire and even more flooding.. Ship was lost.

The Brimestone 2 only has a small warhead, but with six per typhoon it can saturate a ships defences pretty good it seems..

Seems like a cheaper option to saturate a ships defences and use up the vessels SAMS.

I did lose two Typhoons in the first wave after they turned for home. ( I think they decided to climb for some reason )

Anyway a fun little test i thought

That's exactly the sort of doctrine the RAF and FAA are going for in the near future when SPEAR 3 enters full service. Small, accurate, long ranged mini cruise missiles which can saturate SAM defences on land and sea, that use a millimetre wave radar seeker to find and engage targets. Each F-35B will be able to carry 8 internally along with a pair of AAMs.

Unfortunately the Brimstone 2 in-game doesn't work well in a cluttered environment at all. I don't think it has its LST and its radar works the same as an old fashioned one where it just picks the first thing it sees. It could potentially be fixed by making weapons with Mmw radar seekers work similarly to an IR seeker, given that the seeker operates on near optical wavelengths which allow it to create high resolution images of what it sees, and pick out specific targets from amongst the ground clutter depending on what its programmed to do, or something else along those lines. But that's up to the devs and I don't think its very high on their list of priorities unfortunately.

Excellent, i'm having a lot of fun using the brimestone 2 in an anti shipping role.. SPEAR 3 will be a beast and its exactly what the UK has been missing for a number of years..

Saw an article today that work has begun integrating Spear 3 and the Meteor on the UK f35 fleet..

I look forward to seeing it being modeled in this great sim
