[FIXED B1009.27.8] Firing AA Missiles at Nothing

Post by TXTBOOK »

For some reason my fighters are firing sidewinders at nothing. Check out over Asadawi Oil Field.

We cannot understand what is going on from that save. Do you, per chance, have an earlier-point-in-time save of the same engagement?

I think I know what he is talking about, but it's hard to recreate. Sometimes, when an AC fires a Sidewinder at max boresight angle, the missile will fly strait instead of tracking the targets as it should.

Not sure if this is related, but Soviet/Russian long range IRAA missiles seems to not be working as well. They travel in a strait line and don't track targets unless if they are really close to them. In this scenario you can see it happening for some of the missiles.

PS if this is unrelated I will create a new topic.

High boresight failure to track is a real-life event. When early model sidewinders were first used in action over Vietnam many missed their targets because the pilots did not understand the mechanisation of the IR seeker.

The seeker has a narrow field of view. When a missile leaves the rail it takes a few moments to stabilise before tracking. If a shot is taken at a target passing perpendicular to the shooter's course then by the time the missile stabilises the target has already flown through the narrow field of view and the missile flies straight ahead looking for a target. Missiles do not circle around looking for a target for the obvious reason (think circular run Mk14 torpedoes in WW2)

I’m out of town until later this week and will try to post an update or additional save file when I get back.

The issue I thought I was seeing was aircraft firing sidewinders at aircraft that did not exist and no hostile aircraft in area, very similar to another tech support thread which said the issue was fixed in the hot fix release.
