For every Hollywood story of Indians attacking peaceful white people there are other stories of white people doing much worse to Indian tribes - giving them blankets infected with smallpox comes to mind.

I can match one to one of REAL atrocities of Indians against whites to those of REAL atrocities of whites against Indians. Many of which unknown to 99.9% of people.

That was sort of my point - both sides were vicious in settling what was really a political issue of accommodating white expansion while giving the various Indian Tribes enough to live on. It could have been done so much better.
The other point was about Hollywood western movies and how they (in my formative years) always depicted the Indians as mindless savages out to kill white people on sight so they should not be taken as a basis for understanding what really happened. I mentioned that because I am aware that there is a large following of "cowboy culture" in Germany and I did not know how much the OP had looked into the history. By his responses, it is clear he has studied enough already to know the "Indian Wars" were a messy business with no clear good or bad side.

I rather prefer the Canadian term "First Nations" to describe those who inhabited this continent before the Europeans arrived. I think that it describes the situation well.

Yes, BBFANBOY is right. Since my boyhood I have been always in favour of the "native Americans", though I also know not to fall victim to the myth of the "noble Indian". The heros of my youth were Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Red Cloud... and especially Geronimo. But I was always cautious to mention it when being in the States, because I felt there a lot of Americans who glorify Custer, especially his last stand and don't want to hear too much about the Sand Creek or Wounded Knee massacre.
Chickenboy, I'm aware of the dimensions of your country, I always have a rental car and don't depend on public traffic. Spence, no dog, only a Norwegian forest cat, which will stay at home, guarding my wife. [;)]
Thanks for the hint concerning Yellowstone. I don't plan to do hiking-tours, just sightseeing mainly by car there.
I was not aware that how the native Americans are called obviously underwent a similar evolution as how the "Americans with African origin" were named throughout the past decades and centuries.

I've had a few friends in in my life that were Indians. I asked one buddy, whose bandmates called him 'Indian Jim',
whether the handle was insulting. He said he didn't know any Indians who were bothered by it but if you want to be
more specific you would use the tribal name(he was Chippewa)

When Europoean settlers, explorers, and soldiers arrived in North America, especially starting in the 1600s, it was nip and tuck between them and the American Indians for a long time. Sometimes the Indians had the larger numbers, sometimes the Europeans. But out on the frontier, it was sometimes a family or group of families against a real threat of unknown size coming to slaughter your family. Both sides fought desperately hard to preserve what was dear to them. Both sides hated the treachery and bloodthirstiness of the others. And many times various American Indian nations were Allied with the British or the French or the Americans or the Spanish. Gradually the European settlers and their descendants prevailed by sheer numbers and firepower but it took time and distance. There wasn't a tight-knit campaign of genocide. It was a battle of survival until the odds were decidedly in favor of the settlers. And, eventually, there were simply too few American Indians to successfully withstand the pressure. And nature abhors a vacuum. In southeastern North America, the Cherokee Nation included parts of five states but only numbered about 20,000 people. Too few to hold that kind of territory against a burgeoning nation looking for land and other things.

Funny...

I work with teenage boys of all races, colors etc. Last week we were sitting in the common area and I noticed this black boy looking back and forth at me and a Indian boy(from one of the Mexican SW tribes), then he points and exclaims to the room "You two look just alike". I'am very pale and the Indian boy is very dark, but we have the same lips, nose and chin. The Indian boy laughs and says "I noticed that yesterday when we were outside."

I have had that experience before when around Natives, Indians..... whatever the PC term is this week. I once had a surreal encounter with a Sioux Elder/Medicine Man. There is more to this world than what we think we know.

I love the American west. We're going to Utah this summer, just because we've never been there. As a traveler I just keep it simple, I address people as Ma'am or sir unless they want me to call them by their given name.
