The Soviet invasion plan was similar to those of the 1956 Hungarian and 1968 Czechoslovakian interventions in which coups were staged in the capitals while mechanized and airborne units seized key cities. Shows of force intimidated potential opposition, and massive firepower crushed armed resistance.
This scenario is what would have happened if the Afghan Government and military were able to resist the Soviet invasion and how long could they last. If the Afghan Military is able to hold long enough for international pressure to maybe cause a Soviet withdrawal.
