3.0.1 - Naval overun rebase game freeze

Post by BrianJH »

The Axis have just invaded Norway. All of the combats are automatic victories, however when processing the naval overruns, and re-basing Norwegian naval units back to bases located in the UK, I'm seeing a game freeze occur immediately after selecting the port, and clicking the green button.

I haven't quite put by my finger on exactly what causes this, as sometimes it works for the first combat situation, but then freezes up when re-basing overrun naval units in the next combat situation. I haven't managed to process every such combat situation without a freeze occurring a some point.

Wondering if someone can confirm that they see the same thing I am.

Just set die rolls to make sure Norwegian SCS escape and need to be re-based. I don't think it matters if the Germans try interceptions or not, I've seen the freezing issue occur either way.

Game save attached.

I am shooting in the dark, but just to give you my two cents... many times the game seems to stall you have a screen that you are not seeing under the rest of them or simply "displayed" out of the screen area.

Maybe you are being asked something about the rebase and you are not aware of it.

Later today I'll take a look at home and try to reproduce it.

I don't get this bug. I'll select all ships to be rebased together and than click on the North Sea for interception. Interception failed and I could rebase to Plymouth with the Norwegians and end the phase by clicking on the green button. After that the game went on correctly to the next combat die roll.

It doesn't always freeze after doing just one combat, I've had it freeze after doing the second or maybe third combat. See if you can complete the entire combat resolution phase, processing all of the combats without a freeze. I've never managed to do it.

OK, I tried it and in the third combat I could not go on. However, at least in my case the game is not "frozen" but is working and waiting for an answer from me. In my case it's waiting for me to give an answer to go on with the combat resolution.

Don't mind what the map shows, I just clicked on it and took me to Middle East, but the combats were the Norway ones.

It seems to me you are playing on 2 screens at a time. For some reason when doing this, sometimes the pop ups that need to come and ask us to select an option (abort, search, select combat, …) come out outside the screen.

I still believe this is what is happening to you. Even more. Why don't you load a previous phase and play it with only one screen and see what happens?

I believe some nice forum member found a solution for this but it's buried under scores of threads and the thread name didn`t even mention it in it's name. But maybe he may read us now...

If you search through the forum on the word monitor, you'll find many scattered posts regarding the same issue, always with 2 or more monitors, people have tried several configurations of screens to prevent it and tried some work arounds to try to sort it when it happened.

Yes correct. It's not displaying the form to select the next combat, and as you found, you cannot proceed.

I noticed something from your screen shot, however. The active player's flag is set to the Commonwealth players flag, and not the German one, which of course should be the case. It's as though MWIF is loosing track as to which side is actually the active player.

Your suggestions on utilizing a single display did not work for me in this case. The forum links that you referred to were several years old, and as stated further in the thread(s) subsequent code fixes were made to address those issues. Hence, I doubt very much that this would be the cause, I suspect something else is afoot.

FWIW, I,ve managed to progress my game by back revving MWIF to 2.7.5 to complete the Combat resolutions, naval overruns and subsequent naval rebase digressions.

As for the flag, maybe that was the point when they were telling me to rebase the ships, that could be why.

The threads are old but unfortunately some bugs are recurrent. This would fit with going back to a working version free of this bug instead of a new version for MP that could have brought it back. It happened in the previous attempt to go to MP one or two years ago. There was some hot talk about solving the recurrent issues or go on with the MP own problems.
