AAR Netplay series suggestion

Post by Numdydar »

These are great learning tools. So thank you very much.

What I would love to see is one of these done on how to set up the game. Not explaining what rule set to use, but ones discussing scrapping units for the different powers, what are good setups, pros and cons, etc, As that is where I have the most trouble with the game.

With a game that is this long, it is pretty bad when you get 9-10 turns in and realize that what you did at the start really screwed things up.

This would give newcomers a big leg up (and maybe some old-timers too [:)]).

There is a default scraping choice for the beginning of the game. I use it all the time because players better than me designed it. There are some examples of initial setups with pictures in old posts but you should understand each game can begin with different units due to random picks.

I always find it very difficult to give an opinion on what to scrap and what not to scrap. Different players have different views on this.

You'll have some players who scrap f.e. the 3-5 MOT and the 2-1 GAR with the USSR. I don't because they represent 2 more garrison points for the USSR against Germany. I like to empty the infantry pools with the USSR and not build pilots for the obsolete planes in the reserve pool. The Soviets will not be able to withdraw all those aircraft from the frontlines when war starts, but they might be able to withdraw the land units instead...

Should France scrap the MTN unit so it always get the better one, or not?

Some players scrap the 2 range TRS for the CW and the US. Some don't or wait for the CW to see what they draw and than replace that TRS with the Queens. Some players scrap all 0 BP CVP. I don't, because they can be used to maintain high gearing limits for aircraft. For the CW it can be dangerous to scrap to many of those CVP's, because they might not be able to put CVP's on their carriers soon enough.

Some people will say yes on things. Others will disagree with those decisions. Both do so for valid reasons.

Of course there are units which one should scrap. Such as obsolete planes (apart from 0 BP CVP's) and SUB's, TRS for the USSR, Germany and Italy. But what about the Chinese aircraft? To scrap or not to scrap, that's the question...

One can also wait until the production phase to make decisions if one doesn't need the unit type to be put on the map at start of the scenario.

Generally speaking, it's important to get a force pool consisting of the best units. But should one scrap lousy German or Italian INF or GAR which might come in handy to garrison France or Yugoslavia later in the game?

The other questions are debatable, but this one seems to me a no-brainer. The French aren't going to be building a MTN, so scrap the inferior one. This won't affect free France, because when France turns Vichy or is incompletely conquered, it loses half of its force pool anyway, so it always will have only one MTN, and it might as well be the good one.
I thought I knew how to play this game....

In my most recent game, I built the 2nd French Mountain units in Mar/Apr 1940. The game had a good chance of France lasting until Sept/Oct 1940.

I had built all the other French land units (except territorials) and also had the last AA/AT division in production.

How is that possible? I had the Commonwealth send 5 Resources, an Oil, and 2 Build Points to France in Nov/Dec 1939.

French builds first 4 turns: HQ; Mech, 2 Mil; Inf, Gar, 2 Mil; Mtn, AA, Pilot

So I agree, any recommended scrap list mostly reflects a player's decisions about what he us going to do many turns later in the game.

I think setup and scrapping tutorials are a great idea. And I'd probably be willing to record a few over the summer, assuming I can set up the settings correctly.

I would also agree that it's better not to offer hard-and-fast advice on what to scrap except where it's blindingly obvious. Probably the best thing to do would be to go over scrap options for each major power and explain which are obvious and which are to taste.

I did the same thing in the current netplay game with Gerry. I used a lot of CW resources to make sure France got maximum production, forcing Gerry to use both offensives to get to Paris.
I also had the second MTN in production the moment Paris was taken, because I didn't have any other land units to build anymore...
