Scourge of War Gettysburg text problem

I bought Scourge of War Gettysburg yesterday and at first all was well. But now when I try to play all the text on the menu disappears and is replaced with rectangles. The only way to get it to work again is to reset the entire computer and reinstall Windows 10. Curiously when it starts to malfunction when I try to load the game I get a message asking if I want to allow this app to make changes on my device. I must click yes to proceed. I thought about updating the game but when I try I get a message that it can't download the update because an FTP file failed to open. So, what do I do?
