New Years Day, 1943

Post by Anachro »

New Years Day, 1943

My apologies. Last turn was actually New Year's Eve. The dawn of 1943 brings with a very interesting scenario. John moved his carriers south, seemingly chasing after Allied riffraff as per his email and his recon'ing of various dot hexes: "Wanted some New Years fireworks but alas…" Perhaps he'll still get his fireworks, as his decision to move south puts his carriers only 11 hexes from my own. Moreover, he has no detection on my carriers, except for a 1/1 detection which could very well be sigint radio activity. Who knows? He might bring his carriers further south to chase this. Or he might move north towards Efate where he has spotted an auxiliary minesweeper.

One thing to note, if I can manage a carrier battle, I still have 36 DBs and ~130 fighters at Luganville that can try to pickoff fleeing ships. Next turn could be very interesting...or nothing at all if John simply moves north. Very flummoxed as to what I should do, with various options. I will not input my orders yet - what would you do in this scenario? How would you route my forces?

I should note, John's forces clearly seem to be composed of 1 surface force and 2 carrier forces, and this was consistent with scouting from yesterday as well. In total, he appears to have ~500 a/c to my ~700 a/c (659 rising to ~665 tomorrow due to maintenance; not including my CVE's further behind with 35 additional fighters). But his surface force looks very strong, probably some fast battleships and/or battlecruisers. I can stack a decent amount of fighters at Noumea. Currently, Noumea has 115 fighters, 96 LBs, and 12 TBs (poorly trained NZ unit). Luganville has 36 DBs and ~130 fighters. Efate has 38 fighters.

First step should be to get between him and his ports so he needs to burn more fuel to avoid you or re-engage after a clash.
Your SCTFs should be between your carriers and his BBs - only one or two hexes from your carriers .
If he keeps his BBs near his carriers they could soak up a lot of your bomber attacks.
You finally have semi-working torps ... no subs in the area?

Consider whether there is a strategic advantage to keeping your carriers hidden for now ... it depends a bit on future ops plans.

Well, as a non-contestant peanut gallery resident I'm always in favor of carrier battles. [;)]

Still, it looks like you outnumber his flattop-based aircraft by about 650 to 550 (not counting the CVEs). Also, all of those land-based aircraft in the vicinity can't hurt. Your land-based USMC squadrons could be used to fill out losses on your CV decks on Day 2. The US Army and NZ birds in the area could absorb strikes and possible do some strikes of their own. It seems like a great opportunity, but you have a lot more information than I do.

Cheers,

If it was me, the first thing I would do is to make sure my supply of Maalox is sufficient for a couple of days.

IMHO, Option 1. This gives you LBA cover, and a path for damaged ships to take after the fracas. It will put you in range of his SAG, but you will probably loose at least a flight deck, which can then operate from land and continue to put a hurt on him.

I don't see any emergency airfields for his aircraft should you be able to trash a flight deck or two, while you have multiple options. What kind of DL does he have on Efate and the escort TFs there? Will he think those TFs are easy targets and go after them? Does he have DL on your CVs? I don't see any advantages to anything other than option 1.

He has 1/1 DL on one carrier TF. This could be radio activity sigint, or it could just be bad DL where he sees a DD or something. I don't know. He only knows I have an AM at Efate. The other TF is composed of 6 16-kt xAKs he doesn't know are there that I want to move to a nearby dot hex. Knowing John, he'd move north back towards Ndeni and try to hit these small targets on his way back; or he could move south based on the 1/1 DL he has, but his last email makes me think he will move north and try to hit the one little bit of riffraff he has seen. I don't think the 1/1 DL has betrayed the fact I have carriers nearby.

Wanted some New Years fireworks but alas…

THREE today. Nice work Sir.

You can see the DL on my carrier TF in the initial post on the situation. I think the AM at Efate has 10/10 DL or something similar.

The die is cast. Attack range set to eight. Interlocking airfields providing LRCAP from Noumea and Efate.

I hope you have your cruiser and BB search aircraft split between daytime and nighttime search patterns! Land-based search, too.

Your detection advantage could/should be decisive in the outcome, assuming you have accurate numbers on his aircraft numbers.

I hope you spank him here. Some day - one of these days - John has to learn not to go sailing around without the slightest clue about the deployment of enemy carriers on detection on nearby threats.

He already did-in his last game w/ Canoerebel. Didn't seem to dissuade him much.

The other thing to consider is the massive amounts of oil being used as he gallivants all over creation.

We'll see what happens. This was the email exchange I had with him when I sent the turn back to John:
Here you are. KB sure likes to rove around burning fuel all the while.
For a change, I've got plenty. What is that CV to my south? My recon Judy spotted something...

So he knows I have a CV at least from the 1/1 DL. Interesting turn, maybe, or maybe not. We'll see. Keep in mind, I received this response from John 2.5 hours ago. [:)]

Is his comment "CV to my south" referring to the previous turn, or maybe the new one that he just ran?

I would guess it refers to the previous turn, as he did have a 1/1 DL on Task Force 43: CV Saratoga, CV Lexington, and CVL Charlotte, but I'd imagine he only saw 1 CV or CVE and nothing else based on the DL and his response ("that CV" in the singular).

If your signal intelligence says something like "it is real busy at the store" or "month end inventory" and then radio silence....... That is a good thing
