Escort Fighters escorting too far

Can escort fighters escort bombers to targets that are out of the escort fighter's range? Normally I would not think so, but in the game it appears that they can.

They shouldn't be able to, can you describe an in game example so I could take a closer look?

Sorry, my mistake, I just started a solo game to try it out and noticed for the first time that the fighters have a longer escort range than their strike range is, but thanks for the quick reply.
