The KB is still dancing. Subs are hunting. On the 25th the a Soviet sub makes contact, spotting two CS cruisers and escorts before being sighted herself and forced under.

A huge day in the air all over China and Manchuria on the 25th. The IJ try a sweep of Vlad, but MiGs get the upper hand again. The Chinese Lancers sweep near Hong Kong and wear out a strong LR CAP of A6M3, and the follow on sweeps finish the job nicely.

On the 26th both sides hit troops extensively in China and Manchuria with air strikes. Both of us have figured out LR CAP only kills off our fighters if too far from base without radar. Soviet AA is not performing as well as I'd hoped.

The rail is now almost clear from Singers to Pnom Pehn. Just the final dregs of the once strong IJA Singers invasion sitting surrounded at Kluong.

It's interesting to me that the USAAF didn't give a bigger contract to production of the P-43 Lancer in the early war. It seems to outperform both the P39 and P-40 variants up to the P-40K at least. I'd like to have more at least.

The lancer is a good plane but was quickly outclassed by the P-38s and P-47s. For the Chinese it is their best plane for a number of years. There also recon versions and it ended it's days as a trainer.

Ok. back to this campaign now for a bit.

At last subs get another hit on a KB carrier. This time it's Akagi! Nice to see her pop up in the combat screen with a plume of water sprouting at her side. [8D]

At Changchun the IJA easily repels a quick early attack by the Soviets. More is on the way though, and there is a chance to take the base within a few turns if he doesn' further reinforce. The goal is to grab this quickly or force the IJA to heavily invest, leaving their other reserves low and hopefully unable to meet the larger offensive through Taonan toward Mukden.

On the 28th it looks like the KB has decided to retire from its position near Borneo. It's spotted up off of the Luzon coastline. Preparations begin to load invasions for Brunei and Jesselton along with reinforcements and supply for Luzon, where I hope to now begin pushing back the static Japanese positions there.

On the 29th the Allies finally take Hankow. This almost opens the rail into Northern China. There is one unit still blocking near Sinyang. A Chinese Corps is on the way.

Even better, the Soviets crush Taonan on the 30th and net 100+ Japanese fighters. Three groups now wiped out and unavailable unless bought back! Sweet.

These troops will march toward Liauyuan now on the way to Mukden. That base is in the clear, so shouldn't be too tough.

Changchun is heavily reinforced and a DA there failed, so the troops there will hold and try to keep these IJA troops occupied.

Brunei is invaded and captured. Jesselton will fall soon. The troops at Beaufort, refugees of the original Tarakan invasion, are finally relieved by an amphibious assault and more supplies. Miri will load up and come later.

A lot of ships are moving now toward the PI shepherded by the Allied CVs and surface fleets. Also loading is an invasion of Cotabato on Mindanao, where one PI ID still is hanging on (nearby and out of supply. A US ID will land there within the week all going well.

Up North MiGs are having their way sweeping at Kirin and troops chase the Taonan survivors along the road to Liauyuan.

Here is China now. The main current goal is a base from which to strat bomb the Home Islands. Hangchow fits the bill and will be invested soon, with a lot more troops and support on the way. Nanking will also be under siege soon, with troops moving one hex to the side to avoid a shock over the river.

MiGs still got it. Kirin has been an ace generator lately.

The Dutch walked over and took Samarinda at last. Now some bombing on that IJA stack to reduce it further.

The 4Es prepare for the Cotabato invasion by hitting the active Japanese airfield there at Cagayan. The invasion lands successfully and without incident on the 6th.

The Luzon reinforcements near Manila and troops begin moving on Lingayen as well.

Preparations are being made to start the reduction of Japanese industry on the Home Islands. Some bases within 4E range are building up to level 5+ to host the beasts and long range recon are in place to begin the survey of potential targets. So far CAP looks limited, which is great. I'd love to hit some by day if possible. I've also moved all long range Soviet bomers to Vlad in order to get ready for their end of this operation. The goal is to surprise and overwhelming the defenses at first, the switch targets readily to meet the defensive adjustments. He has no NF yet. [;)]

I'm very curious if you have had any difficulty getting supply to flow to Vladivostok?

In my current game the USSR activated on the normal date and for three solid months I could not get any supply to flow there.

The Russians were so hurting for supply in late '45, which came as a huge shock to me, that I started shipping it into Komsolmolsk. I had dropped well over 750k supply there without a drop ever making it to Vlad.

I eventually got desperate and assigned a large portion of my sub fleet, which has almost nothing else to do, to shipping supply directly to Vlad. A few days ago 4 sub transport TFs delivered over 4,500 supply. Its the first time supply in the base has been higher than 20.

Vlad has always been in good supply. Several hundred thousand to start and it's kept the highest supply draw since due to the large port and HQ there. No problems anywhere in Soviet territory even though there has been a lot of combat.

It's the one year anniversary of the campaign!! Much different than I'd anticipated for this game, and it's been a wild ride. Lowpe has been a dogged opponent even though he set a tough challenge for himself by asking to keep Soviets involved after their accidental activation. now we are starting to see late 44 operations happening in late 42! Crazy.

Cotabato landings continue and take the base easily as Manila sees fresh troops and supply unload from massive Allied TFs. The Allied CVs are still camped out protecting it all although only tiny Japanese strikes come in. Troops at Lingayan take the base on the 8th. I'll now try and capture Laong and Apparri with British LRP paratroops, cutting off any hope of retreat and withdrawal. Should be fun.

Some big Allied sweeps do well against massed CAP at Samah. Nice to see some air action. I haven't needed to use the P-38s in a while, but soon they'll be very important, so I'll keep collecting spares and getting the pilots trained up further.

The Allies get a solid 4:1 at Hangchow on the 9th, reducing forts to 3. The Japanese use their BBs hitting the Chinese on the 10th and reinforce with a full ID, a brigade and a regiment. The Chinese shock and get a 1:2 but the IJA takes much heavier losses. Surprised and happy about that. More and better troops are coming, with a Marine ID a few days away. The more he uses here the fewer for Shanghai.

Got the old ladies involved on the 10th with a bombardment of San Fernando. Not bad. The USN BBs are getting ready to go again as well after Pearl. I should have 2 of the 4 heavily damaged back in action within the month. I'm forgoing upgrades on the ones with the long refurb. This means less AA and radar, but I'l need them soon to do any serious invasions closer to the Japanese homeland.

Aparri falls to the paras on the 10th as well. The IJA on Luzon is surrounded. San Fernando is occupied by a force led by mostly PI troops. More solid Allied units are moving in as well.

Up North the path to Mukden is blocked at Liaoyuan. It is attacked but we only get a 1:2 with about equal losses.

The full 'R' Class is only available for the next little while as they start to leave for Europe one by one soon. I'll try to make as much use of them as I can until then. Too bad I don't get them for the duration in this particular game. I'll need all of the old BB I can get soon.

A very good, very large CAP trap in China nets some Wellingtons and a few others trying to bomb the troops arriving at Hangchow. Good move by Lowpe. Escorts did well i the start but lone groups coming later got nailed.

Another unit at Liaoyuan should give us the advantage, but instead the attack "collapses" and achieves another 1:2. I'll have to wait a bit and try again. This is in the clear with only 2 forts, so it won't last long unless heavily reinforced.

A few more small Chinese bases cleaned up. Now on to the bigger fish. I'll begin trying at Canton, Hangchow, Nanking and moving on Peiping soon. In addition, I'm preparing several bases for 4E to strat bomb the Home Islands. I should be able to begin within a week or two depending on airfield construction.

Hangchow is reinforced and the naval bombardments help to give the Japanese a 1:5 defence, disabling a large number of Chinese. The Marines will have to take this one on in a few days. I need firepower.

At San Fernando the Japanese get a 1:1 against the PI troops, and the better Allied units will start to move in and exchange for some worn and reduced PI and armoured units.

Some of the battles up in Northern China are ongoing, and although I only got a 1:2 near Tatung, I think this is progress and a few more will knock these troops back. This will be part of the siege of Peiping in a few more hexes.

The IJN continues to bombard at Hangchow and now also at Nanking. I'll being moving some subs up there to hang out and possibly even drop some mines. I have a much closer sub base now in operation at Manila after the resupply and instalment of the auxiliaries over the past week.

Made some progress at San Fernando. I'll wait now for the fresh troops to continue.

Up in Northern China the slow process toward Peiping continues with a small IJA stack being pushed back again.

I've been prepping fro some Central and North Central Pacific bases with the Aleutian troops. Some have already neared full readiness to hit bases like Pagan, Marcus Island and Iwo Jima. I'll continue for another few weeks, and then make sure the Allied CVs are up to the task. The Saratoga is just about ready but we'll lose the Invincible to Europe soon. The KB hasn't been sighted for just over two weeks now.

Bombardments continue at Hangchow, but the Japanese aren't reinforcing. This should leave them in a bad position soon. Since mines are also on the way, these bombardments will likely stop at some point. [;)]

At Liauyuan the MiGs continue to pare down the Japanese CAP. It's slow, but they are taking almost no losses, so I'll keep it going. Soon I'll add some Il-2 and hit the airfields and troops. I'm beginning to really like this plane.

On the ground another DA at San Fernando does good work, and with fresh troops ready soon the base should fall within days.

On the 16th I begin strat bombing with Soviet bombers from Vladivostok. It's a long journey for them and only a few bases are in normal range. I'll try some night bombing and possibly some day strikes if recon shows few fighters up in certain bases. It's a res, but could be worth it.

The Chinese will try a DA at Canton after finding a solid majority in numbers and having built some forts to protect themselves in the bombardment phase. It'll be a long one I fear.

RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A)

Post by obvert »

Dec 17-18, 1942
A very important two turns. I decided as the USAAF prepares a few bases for strat bombing the Home Islands, now that I'm getting decent recon I should try with the remaining Soviet LR 2E bombers. I have about 80 DBM-3 and DBM-3T left from the early war. They are 11/13 range, so hit many of the more important central bases on Honshu and Hokkaido from Vlad. The DBM-3 has 10 x 100kg bombs, which is good for strat bombing Manpower as it allows more chances to hit and start fires. The pilots are also top notch 70+/70+.

I tried a night raid on Sapporo not very successfully, and I'll keep doing that from NE bases with the old rickety Soviet 4Es.

For the others I decided on a quick hit double strike over two days. After the night bombing I went daylight to Niigata, a Japanese oil producing center, and went only for oil. The strike resulted in 23 hits to the oil and I'll recon to see more conclusively the damage there.

On the 18th though I decided to go all-in (42 style anyway). I sent them all to Osaka to bomb Manpower. There were some Nicks on CAP, but the strike got through, and fires were started. During the turn it looks like 13,000+, and they were still burning at 6900+ at the end of turn. There was no damage t that point, but fires work in mysterious ways ...

Elsewhere the carnage above Liauyuan keeps coming, with MiGs still flying sweeps. Just about time for the bombing runs to start.

Took San Fernando on Luzon with heavy Japanese losses. Also very close to taking Miri.
