The Netherlands

Post by Dirkenator »

Hi,

First I want to thank you for this great game, but there are some questions /
suggestions I have for this game about The Netherlands.

-Why is the Netherlands so ugly shaped?
-Why does The Netherlands only have a minor port in Amsterdam, while Rotterdam has
a major port?
-The Dutch governement resides in Den Haag (The Hague), but the capital is
Amsterdam.
-Why isn't Eindhoven represented? It's a major industrial city / region.
-Why are there no fortifications? What about the "Grebbe Line", the "Peel-Raam
Line" the "New Dutch Waterline" and to a lesser degree the "Old Dutch Waterline"?
At the fortification of the "Afsluitdijk" the German advance was slowed.

Info for instance on Wikipedia about:
"Dutch_Water_Line / New_Dutch_Waterline"
"Battle_of_the_Afsluitdijk"
"Grebbe_line"
"Peel-Raam_Line"

About the Dutch Caribbean:
-Why is Curaçao not part of The Netherlands?

Info for instance on Wikipedia about:
"Dutch_Caribbean"

Hi Dirk

It would have been good to represent places like Rotterdam but unfortunately there are always constraints when designing a map and compromises have to be made.

To take Rotterdam as an example, adding it on the map would have led to us having to remove Antwerp. In game terms, one can think of Antwerp's port as representing both that and Rotterdam, as the port can be used to enter/leave both countries.

In terms of the fortifications, one can think of the strength of the Dutch armed forces as representing the country's defensive capabilities. We could add some fortifications but would probably then have to tweak their starting unit strengths, so the overall effect would be the same.

Regarding Curaçao, if it were to start the game as part of the Netherlands then we'd have to add a script to have it separate from the Netherlands when the latter is conquered, as otherwise the Axis would automatically control it - and really they should have to invade it if they want to control it.

So the way things are keeps things a lot simpler, catering also for those (admittedly very rare) occasions where the Allies might invade the Netherlands instead, as that would require extra scripting work from us to prepare for that possibility.
