Map Icons - Alternatives?

Post by BKL »

Can anyone point me to any mods that modify the in-game map icons for ships, submarines, etc.? I find it a little difficult to tell the difference between some of them and wondering if there are alternatives available.

Thanks!

You may acquire many icon mods and other nice bits of "chrome" on this site.

Be very careful to use things which will work with whatever version of the game you are using, and be sure ALWAYS to save the stock folders in a separate place so as not to paste something new over them.
You always want to save the original stuff in case you don't like the new stuff.

(Look in the art folder in this site for ICONS, etc.

I found a nifty tool with the help of the Internet Archives site called the "wayback machine" which will even find sites long gone.
Seems many of those sites left "footprints" and wayback machine can find them...At any rate, I was able to download files from Spooky's as recent as this morning...and it also helps that I have done no serious "housecleaning" on my saved favorites in years, lol

I remember there being an icon mod that put pretty good weather icons on the map to show thunderstorms, etc. as well as icons for the battlephase in ship battles, such as "target" icons to show who was firing, being targeted, etc. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

That's not the one though it seems similar, if a bit older in style. I remember learning about a new, better-looking weather icon art mod in JorgeStanberry's AAR but can't seem to find it anymore. He's the one that told me about it.

Found Jorge_Stanbury's old AAR and the post where he replied to my query. The weather mod, as well as some other art, can be found here:

I use the "Cloud Descriptive" one and "Battle Icons."

These are the clouds/weather art I use; they're not originally my creation - I want to say they were from one of the Chemkid maps, but I can't remember. I adapted them so that the three weather intensities from least to worst correspond to white / gray / black clouds, respectively. The icons are also rather small and thus don't obscure the port and airbase icons for a given hex.

To use, just place BOTH files in the ART sub-directory in the WITP:AE directory. Make sure to make backup copies of the original weather art (also BOTH files) in case you want to revert back.

Here is a .zip file of the 'hex icons' I use (port, airbase, nation flags, LCU icon, etc.). Small green dashes denote medium (x1) and large (x2)amounts of ships/aircraft at the given base. Small white 'Xs' denote medium (x1) and large (x2) concentrations of LCUs. Japan uses the national flag for its bases, and its ships are distinguished from Allied ships by small flags on their icons. You can, of course, mix and match what icons you use and/or modify these to suit your needs.

Extract the .zip file to the ART sub-directory in the WITP:AE directory; of course, make back-ups of the originals.

Those clouds look like good places to hide from the enemy. [:D]

You'll need to download the entire chemkid map set:
ORIGINAL: DOCUP

I saved these and put them on my dropbox.

Link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4x7a1687bc1sp ... d.zip?dl=0

Assuming you only want to use the clouds, unpack the files into a holding folder and then go to this directory:

ChemKid\Yamamoto\YamatoDamashii_CloudyDay_v1_stock.zip\YamatoDamashii_CloudyDay_v1_stock\ART

In the ART folder are two files, cloud40x40.bmp and cloud40x40_alpha.bmp

Copy both of those into your \War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\ART folder. They will overwrite the originals, so make copies of those first, to be safe.
