Surprise Finland Entered the War

Post by nnason »

Running 1.16
Axis Turn 11 July 1941.

Finland entered the war without meeting rule conditions. Is this a change to 1.16? See Rule 1.21.2. Note there were no MPPs spent to influence Finland.

Since Noah refers to our game, I was surprised myself. If this is really an error, we can try to find kind of a remedy for our ongoing game. Maybe we agree not to attack / move forward at the Finland Front for some turns? But I have allready reoccupied my port, can't change that anymore.

Did some testing for the single player campaign 1939 - same behaviour here. I did nothing except declare war on Russia in the very first turn. Finland joins without hesitation.
Never saw that before - but never tried to conquer Russia before I came even close to Warsaw [:D]
But I think to remember (I am not quite shure anymore), Finland joind in the 1941 Campaign before v1.16. I thought, that was a feature of the campaign, since historically the attack was a coordinated one and started end of June.

Hi

I don't think this is new, but I seem to have missed adding it to the Strategy Guide for the 1939 and 1940 campaigns.

Essentially, what is happening here is intended, as if the Axis declare war on the USSR then providing Finland has a pro-Axis leaning then it will enter the war.

So the northern front can get started!

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the quick reply.

You all did a lot of work to make WiE like WaW.

Do you think you could put into the 1.16 change notes all the rules/DEs that were changed and how? This would apply to any that were not already covered in the notes. For example:
Rule 1.21.2 now reads "Finland will join the Axis upon Germany's attack on Russia any time after May 1st, 1941. No change to force mix." (My guess.)
I think WiE's Afrika Korps rules were changed as well to be like WaW.

Hi Noah

Everything should be there, but I don't think this is a new change at all, it's just that whenever I added the script I overlooked adding it to the Strategy Guide. [:(]

The Afrika Korps hasn't changed in WiE except that there are now some alternative destination locations if the intended destination isn't available.

This is to render gamey moves by Allied players to prevent their deployment meaningless, and also ensure that the Axis player can always obtain the Afrika Korps if they've paid for it. This one is noted in the Version Notes. [:)]

FYI, the German pop-up screen advising that Finland will enter the war (presuming pro-Axis) when you approach the specific cities still shows up.
You might want to amend the text of that as well.

Hi Taxman66

I've looked at the scripts in the 1939 campaign and the German pop-up explaining this is only set to fire when Finland is neutral, so I'm not sure how this could happen.

Could you confirm this is happening when Finland has entered the war, and if so, post a screenshot or do you have a saved turn?

Thanks

At the time I was playing 1.16.00.
I've since upgraded to 1.16.01.

The report (german_report_finland2) was displayed in 1940 (forget the actual turn) as it should. Finland was Axis leaning and Russia was neutral.

What I'm (poorly phrased now that I'm rereading my post) saying is that the text of (german_report_finland2) &(... _finland1) need to be corrected to account for the new Finland enters the war rule.

Those messages are fine, as they are stating a universal setting whereby Finland will enter the war.

An Axis declaration of war on the USSR isn't a universal setting as it will only trigger Finland to enter the war if it has a pro-Axis leaning at the time that happens, and I recall having something about it in these images previously but then removing it.

I'm not sure why now, either because it confused people or because it was hard to make it sound right (i.e. it didn't flow), or both.

Essentially, the advice in both messages is correct, as Finland will only enter the war voluntarily if it has a pro-Axis setting, and diplomacy may be key to ensuring that.

The messages still say you have to approach the designated towns/cities to get Finland to join.
