In TOAW, however, an attack, by aircraft that are characterized as being able to perform stand-off attacks, is subjected to anti-aircraft fire of AA guns of the targeted unit.
This is unrealistic -- no AA gun has the range to attack an aircraft attacking it from tens of kilometers away. Example from TOAW log file. The targeted unit had 20mm AA guns, the attacking aircraft were F-111 (late) bombers with stand-off capability:
AIRCombat:F-111s Low targeted by Defenders anti-aircraft fire (3384/417).
Combat :
Combat : Smite: Air Unit 1st Formation, F-111s Low, (anti-air low), attrition%= 28.
Combat : Defenders weapons firing on Air Unit F-111 Aardvark (late).
Combat : F-111 Aardvark (late)(1) damaged, sent to replacement pool.
Combat : Weighted direct combat losses: 10%
Combat : Check morale: Air Unit 1st Formation, F-111s Low, ouch=135,ouch threshold=50.
Combat : Morale check passed (quality or deployment).
Combat : End smite...
Suggested fix for future release of code. A unit targeted by a stand-off attack should only be able to conduct anti-aircraft fire if there are surface-to-air missiles in the same hex with a SAM range greater than a given distance, say, 9 kilometers. AA guns in the target hex should not be able to fire on the attacking aircraft.
Cheers
