Recon

Post by goodwood »

G'day folks,
The lighting P38 recon planes, when you hear the camera rolling and see the info that photos are taken on a recon mission, is there game value, or is this just ear and eye candy?

When you mention it.....
Mostly an annoyance really, could very well have speeded up the game by removing it altogether and only display a small note instead.

Have to agree with PzB, it's become annoying, especially as no information is displayed in a recon report.

It's not P38, it's recon version, F5 I believe.

There is very important game value - only it's not immediately obvious. Later, during orders phase, if you hover your mouse over the photo-reconed base you'll see a lot more info about what's there then you'd be able to see if there was no recon flight.

Recon planes are of immense value to experienced players in UV! Take care to preserve F5 and Dinah (excellent IJA recon plane) squadrons and use them wisely. (Especially F5 as it has low replacement rate.)

You can do recon with other types of aircraft as well, but recon with specialised recon aircraft is going to be so much better.

To other posters - it's not annoyance. Without recon being shown, you'd forget which recon squadron is assigned to go where. I hated only the "photo click click" sound, so I changed it with very pleasant "huge prop plane overflight" sound. Otherwise, the animation is welcome IMO so you know who does what.

I think there can be game value without the recon graphics and sound.
Sometimes you really wish you could turn it off, especially when the AI sends of numerous recon flights each turn in late 43.

So putting an option button on recon graphics and sound would be nice.
At least in WitP - recon flights will be even more numerous in that huge theatre....!

Hi all,

Oleg is 100% right and there is even more...

If you carefully observe "Combat Replay" you will see that UV game engine will
show you exactly how many recon aircraft are on specific mission over target
and by hearing/seeing number of "click click" and info lines you can determine
how many of those (usually two) made it to complete mission (i.e. if you,
let's say, had 2x F-5 on recon shown to you by UV in "Combat Replay" and you
hear/see just one "click click" and info lines this means that one of your
planes was shot down by CAP and/or FLAK).

So counting clicks is better than showing a little txt note?
Just asking ;)

Since we are not able to save and/or pause the "Combat Replay" for
reading info lines in small window at the bottom of UV screen the "click
click" is much more useful because it's harder to miss...

What about those who play without sound or can't hear?
Or those who want to speed up game play?

Never really cared about how many 'clicks' I hear - if the information provided about my recon target is insufficient, I send out another recon flight.

Playability is very important - a big game like UV and WitP can be very time consuming.

Having options to turn certain graphics on/off would be an enhancement.
Hard to please everyone, so that's just my 2 cents :)

I'm with you on this one PzB.

If you have to listen to the number of clicks during recon to get vital info, there's something wrong with the game interface. It's like saying Halsey/Yamamoto would spend all day at the airfield counting out the number of planes leaving on Recon, and listening to the radio to get the position reports from the aircraft out on naval search.

I'd have thought that this sort of info would be available in a written summary each day, a bit like giving us a detailed text report of all naval searches and recon performed. I always expected this info to be available via the intelligence window. Sure some of the position reports may be out of date, but it'd be useful to know when and where enemy ships have been sighted. Trying to follow the naval search reports by eye can be tedious, not to mention the possibility of missing some thing vital information if I get distracted when the latest replenishment shipment of beer/coffee/tea arrives. Maybe this is available now, and being a newbie I've just not found it.

I agree that **** shutter is getting soooo annoying. God I hope they do away with it for WitP. At the very least reduce it to one shutter click.

Z key

Hi, Just hit the Z key. The sounds stop and you zip right through sightings.

Are you kidding? All this time and I never knew that. My hot key list says that the Z key is for zoom map. When did this change? Cant wait to try it.

thanks
