WOW. I tried Mozilla for S&Gs and it really is a LOT faster than IE

I just upgraded my browser to NS 7.1 and I haven't noticed any kind of slowness...well, once to be precise but that may have been just a net.burp of sorts. :p

Just a thought..would the number of unread posts have any effect?

I switched to Mozilla some time ago, didn´t regret it yet. Indeed one of the fastest (maybe even the) browsers around. The amount of usefull plugins is even making it easier to switch. And the one thing that really makes it a nice thing, it works, unlike Netcrap

But I also must say that I don´t notice a considerable slowdown with running IE6.1

As for the slow response times some people seem to have. It can be thousands of things. Not necessarily the webserver. Do a trace route to www.matrixgames.com and look if there´s a bottleneck somewhere between your ISP and us. PHP scripts are very picky when it comes to package losses or high PINGs. That was one of the main reasons for the various problems we had with our old PHP based main website.

As for the forum, this is the beta 3 version of VBulletin. We had to switch to the beta version since our MySQL database went corrupt on a daily basis and although it´s easy to fix it´s still a pain in the butt of course

. The beta of Vbulletin fixes that problem. So the slow response times maybe due to the fact that this is a beta running and not a final code optimized version.

tracert does show about 2min to reach www.matrixgames.com from germany. This is might be a reason for slow submits but why is this not consistent ?

Yeah Mozilla is using the Netscape engine but fully refineing it so its even quicker. Firebird is the quickest of the lot.

I have noticed bad performance as well. A tip i've learned is try to avoid posting on weekends, that's when the forums seem to be the most unstable.

I had assumed that the server was running into bandwidth problems now and then, and this was the problem, but after reading these posts, I don't know anymore. I do know I have set up many php bb systems in the past and never had this problem. HOWEVER, it could very well be that MG gets too many visitors (not such a bad thing?), for their own good. I would not be surprised if the current database hooked up with the forum just can't handle it all sometimes.

Try it now and see if its better. We have just installed new servers again and we have really unlimited bandwidth so that should not be an issue.

Thirty seconds to bring up the reply page. 30 seconds to type this and hit send.

I gave up waiting to edit my previous post at 2 minutes. So I just replied and it took another 30+ seconds to load the reply page. And it takes about 20+ seconds for the reply to be posted for all to see.

This is not good. I used to get blocked from submitting messages too quickly because you only allowed one reply every 30 seconds to block hackers. No worries about that happening now. The new system is very very slow!

Those of you who are having trouble with the header seeming to slow things down should check your security seeting. It may be that you are flushing the graphic out of your cache and having to reload it every time? That is the only thing I can think of that would casue the header to slow things down.

THere is no way the header can "slow the load down" unless you are forcing your browser to redownload it everytime you refresh the page.

The issue with the header is that it is visible.

It is visible to anybody in the ofice who walks past the back of my cubicle.

Please arrange a curtian for the back of my cubicle - or else remove the sticky header.

To make a "window shade" go to :

Go to Misc and dowload the microapp "pushpin".

THis adds a selection "always on top" to the popup menu you get when you right click on the top window frame.

Make small excell spreadsheet or word table to cover teh top quarter of your screen. Make "always on top"

THere you go, banner is dutifully covered by cool, work realted stuff while you browse away below it

I also had a post (or two?) "disappear". When I entered the forum it showed me as the last poster in the thread, then it disappeared later.

I'm almost 100% sure I posted that message, because I always make a point of going back into the topic to read it, and I know I must have done that. Anyway, it's gone.

Well, I've been here about a half-dozen times today. I'm not noticing any improvements in the load times of the front page, it's still about a minute.
The first thing that loads is the Matrix banner, at the top of the page - this takes about 20 seconds. This is followed by the airplane sound from the UV Banner, at about 35 seconds. After about another half-minute, the rest of the page finally appears.
I notice that, unlike most other websites, the front page appears all at once (except for the UV banner sound and the big Matrix banner at the top, as stated above). With most (all?) other sites I visit, pages seem to load with the various graphics appearing gradually. Just FYI...
Maybe the sound from the UV banner is doing something bad...? Sorry, I'm not tech savvy about these things.

As for navigating around the forum, it seems (!) to be a little faster after you guys tweaked it today, but I can't be sure. It's still slower than other similar websites' forums. All FYI...

Another thing I've noticed: At the bottom of this composing page, I *do not* have Smilies disabled, yet I am not able to use them. What might be up with that?
