Phyrric victory

Post by Hartley »

I just lost a 145 F4Fs/SBDs/TBFs in exchange for 8 Zeros and 9 reported hits on IJN carriers.

The Wildcats were flying at 10k feet, were fresh , but still got slaughtered.

At least my CVs came away clean.

How many escorts did you have? At what altitude? Were your 9 hits good ones? Your planes can be replaced but good pilots are valuable. Still. I you put the CVs away or under it could be worth it.

Ar loss

Hi, I'm also interested into cause of so many air loss.
CAP or AA? What were the enemy TF's composed of? (Whats the date?)
Can you post the combat.txt report
(How many were destroyed versus damaged)

(I think the combat report got overwritten by a new turn)

It was a series of 5 strikes by a 5-CV TF (McCain) on a TF with at least 5 CVs, 2 CVLs, 2 CAs and a few DDs. .

The escorts were all set to 10,000 feet. 145 total planes were destroyed, mostly by Zeros. Another 70 or so damaged.

Date is late 9/42. Scen 19.

Are you playing the AI? If so are you playing on the hard setting?

for the MI force. Your mission, Commander Waldron, whether you choose to accept it or not......

Hmm,
I would guess you're playing the AI on the hardest setting.
I had a similar experience long ago when I tried to protect a landing on GiliGili with four CV and 109 Fighters on CAP. The AI sent in a MASSIVE strike from Rabaul consisting of some 140 Zeros and close to 100 Nells and Betties.
I lost ALL my CAP and three carriers...

I was obvious that on that setting the AI starts to "cheat".

I turned to PBEM since then... :D

Yep, AI on hard.

BTW, I'm seeing that 25 Vals+ 24 Kates were 'destroyed on field' overnight, meaning, I presume, that at least one of those CVs is on the bottom of the Bismark Sea.

I've gotten burned playing the AI on hard. You're basically loading the dice for the AI

It was a vicious price to pay, but still nine hits on Japanese CVs is not a bad thing. You may never see some of those CVs again.

It gives the term 'Fortress Rabaul' a new meaning, particularly in scen 19. It's not easy to get a foothold anywhere within range of Rabaul-based escorted LBA.

I kind of like this setup.
