The beasts arrive at night, but the port is empty so no hits on shipping. During the day lots of Lightning sweeps, but I stood down the air force.

Lots of activity, as several battleships and kb push forward, but the task force commander decides to stand off...so no naval clash this night.

But an Iboat surge does go in, and the 14cm deck gun does some damage in a surface attack.

Lightnings sweep all over Okinawa and islands adjacent (looking for bleeding CAP) but only find one Tojo Sentai at Naha, which does well by itself losing about 2-1.

Against the Soviets Japanese bombers punish a Soviet Corp, while the 1st & 3rd Tank Divisions supported by an infantry division and other troops attempt to pocket the Soviet thrust.

Night bombing here, and the Petes on night CAP next door can't respond in time so good manpower hits, but once again the low manpower present means no industry destroyed today...hoping the fires are put out before any damage done tomorrow.

Once again a misuse of night bombing targets.[:)]

Several Lightning sweeps get met by Jacks and company for the first time. Loss ratio drops to 2-1 so that is better.

My pilots in general are pitiful.[:D]

Allies switch and go for Light Industry bombing, much better move for him, and despite the combat report knock out six. I suspect Allies will keep nibbling at the corners before and rest their heavies for a major raid on Osaka or Tokyo. I won't be able to stop it.[:(]

Very few AA guns here, just 20mm.

More night attacks on the same base...

Only hit is scored on light industry, but it yields 3 factories destroyed.

Interesting that one bomber squadron was on a half a load.

Moving some more AA here, and some more radar. Converted another Chutai to Dinah fighters for night duty.

This is the right tactic for the Allies to pursue, constant night bombing, finding weak spots and continuing the attack for at least one additional day since assigning night fighters there is almost always a one day delay.

Put some recon, and moved some cruisers to bombard (they weren't spotted), but the Allies move the 50 heavy bombers and 50 aux away. Too bad.

But it is a night with no night bombing.

Two days of light actions, but a squadron of Lilly IIb flew 8 hexes to attack some PT boats...never saw that before.

But then on the night of the 3rd Japan sorties two battleships to hinder a large convoy unloading south east of Formosa.

It was planned to be a hit and run skirmish, with threat set to low...but something went wrong -- perhaps too high an aggression leader in the Captains (I didn't double check). Should have put Kubota in charge (70Naval, 37 Aggression)[:@]

First fight, Nagato does nothing.[:(] Exeter takes one 36cm hit but other than that disappointing.

The Allies are moving the big girls nightly from Formosa to cover, and the IJN SAG should have retreated after the first fight, but didn't.

Nagato does next to nothing and sinks with lots of ammo, while Hyuga does great, putting lots of 36cm into the South Dakota (at least three bounced of her armor probably saving the ship), 3-4 into the Washington, and 1 into North Carolina.

Surely the SAG will retreat now...

Nope, and the British launch great torpedo spreads and punish Hyuga. Some solid superstructure hits, but all other shots bounce...and finally the SAG decides to retreat back to Okinawa.

Hyuga gets only one hex, and the Zero LRCAP, over the island not over the task force, manages to spoil four waves of attacks on her until some Fighter-Bombers slip thru and plant some 500 pounders on her which bounce.

I figured there was a good chance the raid would go sidewise, in which case the damaged ships would retreat back to the closest port...so I LRCAPed there to protect the splintered escort task forces. It has taken me many years & many lost ships to figure that out!

Big Soviet attack tank battle on the western line...and once again the 2nd Tank Division over performs! It is easy to see why the 1st and 2nd Tank Divisions are the best ground units Japan has.

Type 1 Medium tanks, and then in 6/44 the Type 3 Medium tanks are killers. Way over powered, and in real life I think none of the Type 3 ever saw action.
