Damage from Ammo/Fuel Explosion, apparent near misses

Post by spence »

Does anybody have any hard data as to the fire/flotation/systems damage that one can expect from an Ammo or Fuel Explosion result when a bomb/torpedo/shell penetrates the armor of a ship?

Has anyone had a SHELL cause an Ammo/Fuel Explosion?

Does one of those apparent near misses with bombs cause any amount of damage or is it just an animation thing?

Anyone ever see a ship actually sink (as happens sometimes in surface combat) as a result of damage during a bombing raid?

Feel kinda dumb replying to my own post when nobody else has but here are a coupla observations from a PBEM game I'm in:

Shokaku was reportedly hit by 6x1000lb bombs and 1x22" torpedo.
One of the 1000 lb'ers caused a fuel explosion (and one apparently caused negligible damage).

Shoho was reportedly hit by 3x1000lb bombs.
One of the bombs caused an ammo explosion.

On the next turn the Shokaku had not moved at all (or maybe one hex). Her speed was apparently very low as land based B-26's, A-20s and A-24s with experience ranging in the low 50's and high fatigue scored about a dozen hits with 500 lb bombs (I think only 1x1000 for the A-24s). My opponent emailed me that at least when he finished his move after the initial attack he thought the Shokaku had a decent chance of getting away so her SYS and FLT couldn't have been too high. The 2nd days strikes were fatal though with Shokaku sinking at the end of the turn.

Shoho moved 1 (or maybe 2) hex. Because she was further away from Port Moresby only one small raid was directed at her and she sustained no further damage. I think she got away.

I never pay attention to what the text says "critical hit, massive internal damage, or ammo explosion". I don’t believe they actually mean anything at this point.
Has anyone had a SHELL cause an Ammo/Fuel Explosion?
Now that you mention it no… but then its very rare that I get shell hits on a carrier, and I don’t really pay attension anyway.
Does one of those apparent near misses with bombs cause any amount of damage or is it just an animation thing?
The splashy things – just eye candy

Ships never sink during the combat animation phase of a bombing attack… they can sink right after one though.
