Please Don't Shoot Me Question on (Steam)

Post by Zovs »

So I was out right opposed to using Steam but decided to give it a fair shot.

I installed and logged in to Steam and added Order of Battle, Panzer Korps and SC3 (WAW and WIE).

I have a new VM (my old one just died a horrible death) and just installed TOAW III.

So my dumb question is can TOAW IV manual install coexist with a TOAW IV install from Steam?

Please don't shoot me, just trying to make my life easier with the crash (need to try to get all my files off that dead hunk of a VM...sad sad face).

thanks,
Don

You should be able to have both installed, each independent of one another. I have Commander The Great War installed via Steam and also a modded version installed via the Matrix download so I can choose which version to play with a click on my desktop.

I have nothing but trouble with TOAW IV steam install. (Note: steam is usually fantastic but not in this case)

Folders and files are not what I think they are, especially when using editor. It became such a headache I have given up for the time being.

Any luck for you?

Use it all the time. No issues. Any time you play a scenario in game mode the editor will open in that folder. What you have to do is open a scenario in game mode that is in the folder you are going to edit in. Then the editor will open there. This is not a Steam issue. It's a long standing TOAW 'thing'. I have no idea why it was made that way.

I guess my real question is I am happy with TOAW as it is manually installed. I don’t want steam screwing up that install. I don’t mind steam for my Panzer Corps and OBB and SC3 games.

And there is the funny part. Because the way TOAWIV is installed in the Steam directory is the same way all TOAW games have been installed before TOAWIV was introduced. When TOAWIV was introduced preSteam some files got thrown into the Documents directory and some got thrown into the TOAWIV directory. That caused loads of confusion. Then TOAWIV is released on Steam and all of a sudden someone decides that the non Steam game needs to be switched around and it all gets even more screwed up than it was before.

This problem:

"Folders and files are not what I think they are, especially when using editor. It became such a headache I have given up for the time being."

Has been around since TOAW Volume 1. Why no one has fixed it in twenty some odd years is a mystery.

Designers and players: how to package and install scenarios [11/19/2017]

Note that you MUST work within 'Documents/My Games/The Operational Art of War IV'. If you attempt to work within 'Program Files/...', installation will not function properly.

I'm still confused. But this must not be an issue anymore, otherwise it would have been corrected, right?

What was the issue? More confusion?

The only thing I tried steam on is PanzerKorps and OOB.

I'd rather use my TOAW IV in the way I installed and created it.

So no confusion here but only confused by the confusion in general, no?

I use both the Matrix install and the Steam install. I have no issues with either. I did do a complete install of the Matrix install and I can see why people are confused. Try it. Delete everything everywhere that has to do with TOAWIV including all of your folders in Documents. Or just rename the folders. Then do a fresh install. You'll see why new users get confused.

IIRC Jack, I had .20 as the default installer and then had to patch it to .21 (it may have been .19, I can't recall). But I sort of understand what you mean. I had no folder in the mydoc until I opened the game or saved a scenario or something and then everything was there or some weird ness like that.

So yeah I get that i confuses folks.
