Why Is This Website So Slow?
Moderator: maddog986
To be honest if were all not experiencing problems with speed it cant be the forum.
Get a faster modem or cable connection if thats not an option and Ive said it three times already and it is recommended by two admins download Mozilla and stop using IE or Netscape!
I had real slow down on this site with IE so I changed through someones advice and the results are amazing.
So either take some advice to sort out or problem or just put up with it.
Their not going to redesign the whole website after just upgrading it.
For christ sake we even have people know moaning about the colour!

Not a speed problem but...what just happened to me is that I tried to reply to a post..I wrote my message and clicked 'post reply'. All went fine until I just got a blank screen and 'done' in the task bar. Of course the post didn't go anywhere...went back and clicked 'post reply' again and it worked...
Just that I'd never before encountered that blank screen.

Oh God give Me strength to accept those things I cannot change with a firearm!
It has happned before, at first I thought it may have been someone messing with me, but I think it is something with the board. The posts that I have noticed that were "deleted" were short and stupid so I doubt it was personal.Marc Schwanebeck wrote:That is by purpose, we installed a script that deletes Igotmilk™ posts on a random basis

Would you be ever so kind as to change your avatar into something less racey? It's quite grotesque, annoying, and offensive.Igotmilk™ wrote:It has happned before, at first I thought it may have been someone messing with me, but I think it is something with the board. back to the original topic - could it be your browser is trying to download all of the animated banner ads before showing any of the page at all? Hearing the sound before everythign else loads may be a clue.
there may be a setting somewhere to tell your browser to load all info first before displaying it...
I'm essentially graphically and history oriented, unfortunately to connect the two I have to do maths. I hate maths.

I think someone else suggested this earlier.brent_2 wrote:back to the original topic - could it be your browser is trying to download all of the animated banner ads before showing any of the page at all? Hearing the sound before everythign else loads may be a clue.

The only relevant settings I see (and understand) in my IE6.0 are in the Tools/Internet Options/Advanced window. They are:
1)Play animations in web pages
2)Play sounds in web pages and
3)Play videos in web pages
all of which are on and will stay on because, once again, I'm not having problems at any other website.
Speaking of animated banner ads, there's only one, isn't there, the UV banner? So once I'm past the front page that shouldn't be an issue, right?
I'm not tech savvy when it comes to this stuff, but what I frankly suspect is that the beta version of this website software which Matrix is running might be the culprit, or prehaps all the pictures and animations people are adding to their posts - but that's just a guess for me.
As an aside, what's interesting now is that the smilies are working for me - they weren't yesterday.

smilies weren't working for me yesterday either, I did a windows update this AM, updated and ran NortonAV, plus cleared the cache / cookies, and now they work. Could have been any of the three I suppose.
The main page does 'pause' for me while it is downloading too - about 3 seconds. The UV and Squad Assault banners (the two this time around) maybe take that long to download? Doesn't seem out of line to me...CNN and MSNBC site both take about as much time.
I don't think the issue is the beta of the software...Wargamer and CSO are all using the same software and I haven't seen any problems related to the software, only user settings
(not aimed at you S-C)

We (well 'they' - Marc and others) are slowly but surely tweaking things into better working order. Youshould see more and more stuff work as we learn the ins and outs of the new version. It may be a beta, but its has a LOT of nice features compared to the old one.
The web in general seems to be rather "weird". I've seen ping times to teh matrix server today from 16ms to 257ms

How do you ignore a poster that appears relatively at random as much as anyone else? I haven't ever used the ignore, does it blank out their complete post along with their avatar?Les the Sarge 9-1 wrote:There is an easier way to deal with him Charles, just put him on your ignore list, you won't miss his posts at any rate.
The only thing ineresting in them is usually the Avatar.

Easy trick:Charles_22 wrote:BTW, forgive me if somebody has already mentioned this, but it is annoying, and that is, that when refreshing a forum page (at least before you've selected a thread) it will knock you out of the forum into the main page.
in IE, right click on the forum frame, click refresh.
in NS or Mozilla, right click on the forum frame, then "this frame", click reload frame. There are plugins for Mozilla that let you reload the current frame without the "this frame" submenu.
in the user control panel you can turn off viewing avatars, signatures, and images if you wishCharles_22 wrote:How do you ignore a poster that appears relatively at random as much as anyone else? I haven't ever used the ignore, does it blank out their complete post along with their avatar?

Charles click on the Profile tab in anyones post, it takes you to that persons details. Bottom left you will see add to buddy list add to ignore list.
Select one.
Once ignored, the person's posts are just not displayed. Poof, they can rant endlessly and you don't have to care.

I LIKE that my life bothers them,
Why should I be the only one bothered by it eh.

Thanks, that works, but I've never had to do it that way before, just a standard ol' F5 always seemed to work.Marc Schwanebeck wrote:Easy trick:

Okay, but it does knock out everyone's avatars doesn't it (my viewing them)? Seems the more sensible thing would be to get rid of objectionable material. If someone is displaying direct porn, and that avatar isn't far from that, do we tell people to switch off avatars? I understand you're not saying that, as you're just trying to tell me how it can be done, but I did think the website was trying to keep something of a family image about it (despite the AOW forum). The family image doesn't remain when garbage like that prevails, one or more persons turning off viewing avatars or not. If avatars can be so provocative, then what's to stop posters from making the posts themselves laden with such things? Anyway, I know you may not have wanted to get into discussing this angle, but thanks for the directions nonetheless.brent_2 wrote:in the user control panel you can turn off viewing avatars, signatures, and images if you wish
