Another Irritating Thing About This Website...

Post by StrategyCat »

Another irritating thing about this website, other than it's overall slowness (see my related topic, 'Why Is This Website So Slow?'), is the 'How To Use This Forum' page that comes up after I click on 'Forums'.
Now, I can't possibly be the only one that finds this unnecessary. The rules here are probably not much different from most other websites, so why put everyone through this thing everytime they go to the forums?
Can't this FAQ page be put someplace else?
Just speaking for myself, but all it's doing right now is slowing my access to the forums even more, by about another 30 seconds or so.

Thanks, I knew someone would suggest that.

I like to keep things tidy on my computer, including my bookmarks, so I'd rather not have more than one link to a website. This might sound anal to some people, but...well, maybe it is.

It seems I'm supposed to jump through all manner of fiery hoops just to grace this place with my presence, but that ain't gonna happen.

When I click on "forums", I get...the forums... no "how to page"?

How is making a bookmark that gets you to where you want with one click "jumping through fiery hoops" but starting at a homepage and navigating from there EVERY time isn't?

Me too, that´s why I categorize bookmarks (some 3500+) , that´s really tidy.

Well, then you're experiencing something I'm not, because I'm first taken to a 'How To Use Our Forums' page. It seems there's a difference between what you're seeing and what your customers are seeing.

I already addressed this issue in my previous messages. The main reason I like to always start on the front page whenever I visit a website is because that's where the news is announced, which is rather important for obvious reasons.
I don't like jumping right into the middle of a website, be it the forum or some other place, because it does not give me an overview of what might be happening at other parts of the site. I would suspect that there are many other people who might feel the same way.
I really shouldn't have to explain this, as it's common sense.

Beyond that, I am not going to:

1) change my internet browsing habits, which have served me well for many years

2) change the way I have my bookmarks organized and

3) download extra software...

...just to be able to possibly enjoy this website.

Let me put it to you another way, since your response had kind of a terse intonation:

Lack of preparedness on the part of Matrix does not constitute an emergency on my part.

I apologise genuinely if this comes off sounding rude or unfriendly.

But holy sheep dip, we are complaining about being forced to make a single mouse click on a link to the forums from the home page.

Is your life span that short man? :)

Is it really that daunting a challenge?

I have no trouble getting to the Home page from right here right now in the middle of this post even. The link is right there. look on the top of your screen man.

If you insist on going to the home page first fine, do so.
I prefer coming to the forums first myself. I can always go from here to there, as opposed to there to here.

For someone with extensive online experience, you possess an astounding level of difficulty with something not meriting a thread to discuss.

Yee gods man.

Stategy Cat - if you want to skip the forum "entry page" (yeah I get it too by clicking on the orange "forums" button in the top bar) you can just click on one of the active thread links in the bottom left window of the main page, that will bring you directly into the forums and you can navigate from there.

personally I have a "games" section in my shortcuts (actually called CC, but that's another story) that has all the main pages I visit bookmarked, and then a sub-folder for forums, with shortcuts that link me to the main index of each forum. Taking a small amount of time to create the separate links prevents me from taking the time and needing to do the extra clicking you are describing here each time I visit.
I'm essentially graphically and history oriented, unfortunately to connect the two I have to do maths. I hate maths.

I like coming to these forums, as a result I have optimized my way of getting here. It's totally your perogative to do whatever you want but this sounds like someone complaining just to complain since you really aren't interested in even the simplest solution on your end. I work with a lot of people like you... aint life grand?

Nice try, but that's only half of my complaint. The other half concerns the added 30 or so seconds I then have to wait before I get to the Forum by having to click through the 'How To Use Our Forums' page.

But yes, even if this site weren't as slow as molasses in North Dakota in the wintertime, I would still question - and complain - about having to click through an inane 'How To Use Our Forums' page. It's stupid.

That page is for NEW members say it slowly till it sinks in.

If it doesn't sink in, tough.

I never go by there because, well, I don't have to.

I too learned that years ago.

And the site isn't slow, you're slow.

I agree with SC, the site is slower than it was before this "upgrade."

But my smilies are working today. :) It is nice that they appear right where you want them instead of leaping to the bottom of the page like they did before.

Well, just so the moderators have something to compare with, I don't have any problem with this web site. Yeah, sometimes it takes a little longer to post but very rarely. When I click Forums I get Forums and pretty dang fast too. For the record I'm using IE (god knows what version) and a very fast cable modem. Maybe it's the cable modem but this site works just as well now as it did before the facelift. It's always worked well for me. Guess I'm just lucky or maybe my cable modem is fast enough that I don't notice any problems. I even added an avatar for the first time and it worked without the site even blinking an eye.
Anyway, just wanted to post this to show that not everyone is having problems. I'm just lucky I guess.

Lucky, well, I wouldn´t call it that. It´s simply that people that do not have problems seldomly post that ;).

Here's what I found out:

To get rid of all these weird time and date notifications, you need to go into your profile management and reset the timezone to the one applicable for you. Even if it already says so!

This solved all weird preminitions of tomorrow for me. :p

It has slowed way down for me also. Especially trying to post. Plus the fact that the avatars don't work, and wierd color abnormalities.

Maybe it's optimized for XP and IE6?

Nope, since it runs like a charm (and faster) on other browsers too.

Did you upgrade your browser yet Old Eagle? There´s nothin gin the style sheets that cold cause your problems. They´re okay. But since your browser (IIRC it was IE v 5.00 right?) it very outdated it could possibly be that it has problems with more advanced CSS styles. Actually the styles are not advanced but pretty basic, but you never know. It might be the hierarchy.
