Capture of london with parachutist and realism

Fury Games has now signed with Matrix Games, and we are working together on the next Strategic Command. Will use the Slitherine PBEM++ server for asynchronous multi-player.

Capture of london with parachutist and realism

Post by Gilber »

I don't think the subject has already been covered on another thread

When London is the last big city to take for the axis. The axis uses a clever and very efficient technique:
The axis places about 10 tactical and medium bomb plus a parachute unit within range of London. After a massive bombardment to destroy the Allied unit placed on London the axis moves the paratrooper to London and the game is over.

I find that this trick kills the realism and interest of the game.

The interest: because this solution is widely used and therefore predictable.

Realism:
I am not sure that even a massive bombardment can lead to the complete destruction of a unit (especially in a city). Demoralized, Disorganized, partially destroyed yes, but perhaps not totally destroyed.

I'm not sure that dropping a unit onto a city or even a wooded area is very realistic.

I am not sure that the momentary occupation of London (with one action without return) will lead to the capitulation of the allies.

I am not sure that the absence of limits in the simultaneous operational movement of units is very realistic.
even if you have the necessary MPPs I think the number of units you can move is not unlimited.

What do you think of that?

If taking London ends the game for the Axis, it's because they have captured Leningrad, Moscow, Stalingrad, Cairo and Paris. In that situation the game is all but over and a quick end is a blessing!

It is predictable, as you say, but that means the Allies should know to place all their fighters to give air support to London. If they can't do that, the game is all but over (see above).

Although I would like a 'right of reply' where the Allies get one turn to try to retake London (and Berlin, for the Axis), I think that it's not a big deal given that the game is all but over, anyway. I am repeating myself here.

There might be some merit in restrictions on operating units (fuel for air units and availability of rail networks for land units) but I haven't seen it as an issue.

I totally agree, and I did make it so that the Victory Conditions for London only applied if all the hexes around London were also in Axis hands.

This means that if the Allies have other units adjacent to the city then the battle continues, and there is the possibility for counterattack.

However, on checking the scripts I see that I have only implemented that in World At War. I must apologize as I thought I'd done it in both games, so I'll put that on my list for the next patch. [:)]

For the record, this was discussed heavily some time ago (has it been a year?).

Thus is the first I've heard of an intended change.

I'm not sure if it is too big a deal though. If the axis are at the point of just needing London and can pull the Luftwaffe back from Russia they can probably invade too. Would take more time, particularly if the KM is damaged or wrecked, but its still possible. Economics are probably favorable to the axis as well at this point too.

I think that after it was discussed I decided to implement it in World at War as that was then under development, and then I forgot to implement it in War in Europe.
