Whats your squads performance ?

Post by LarkinVB »

One month after release I'm curious about your most advanced squad. What rank and composition ? Already played campaign 3 ? At what difficulty level do you play random encounters ?

I've barely made it through campaign 1. About the 3rd mission or so of Campaign 2, I keep screwing up, forgetting to save when the battle starts and losing my squad. Between that and some really stupid luck in Campaign 1, I've restarted countless times.

(last time, someone hit my leader, from 4 or 5 hexes, whatever the max range is on a Tesla, and blew her head right off. This from a pilot I know to be at best Green. Argh. Time before that, lost like 90% of the titans on the battlefield to a fluke series of engine explosions, leaving the one surviving titan, the enemy, legless sitting in a woods hex on fire. Leastways I know that fight, despite what the game says, that game was a draw. Double argh.)

Gotten 2 of my squaddies up to rank 4 and into Medium Titans a few times.

Squad composition is nearly always the same. 4 jocks.
Leader CC, Cannon
Business Manager CC, Energy, Guided
Mechanic CC, Energy, Cannon or Unguided
Cyborg CC Energy/Cannon

Starting Titans/ Light titans

Swift Death becomes an Apparition or Driller(Light Titan, 2 Vibra Claws, 4 Lt Meson Guns)

Lightning (Pulse Laser, 2 GME's) (or, rarely now, a Pack Hunter) becomes a Raining Death (Lt Titan, 4 GMH's) or Ice Lord

Fireball becomes Inferno or Imp
OR
Banzai or Guru becoming an Imp

Pulseray (Stingray replacing all weapons with 2 pulse lasers) becomes Imp or Raygun (2 Pulse Lasers, 2 Heavy Meson Guns)

Medium Titans

Pariah (or whatever you call that Medium with all the GMH's)
Hipshot
Crucible
and that is about it.

As I said, I keep having to restart. I keep having memory lapses about every 6 - 8 battle I play through, and I forget to save the battle when I start. And of course, almost every time, that is the battle where every thing goes incredibly wrong. I mean, failing 98% rolls kind of wrong, while my enemy punches through green armor and damages my engine on 2 - 10% chances to hit wrong. I mean losing my head to 4 succesive GMH hits kind of wrong. It is kind of comical, in that, as long as I remember to save my game at the start of battle, I rarely will have to USE that save, things will rarely go wrong, luck will be about equal on both sides, and superior tactics (mine :) ) carries the day. I forget to save, and I don't care if I've got 4 mediums facing 4 recons, my entire squad dies horribly. (I actually had a Crucible go up against a Fireball in one such case, and lose. Was mortifying as hell. Was even worse when my Swift Death got base to base with a Pike, and got punched unconcious).

Not that I'm complaining, or blaming the game.

It is after all my fault for not saving. And, apparantly, my existence on this earth is solely for some god(s) amusement, as it is not like my luck in game is atypical of my luck in life.

Still, despite it all (maybe because of it all?) I AM enjoying the hell out of this game, despite sucking at it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've finally gotten smart, and copied a squad over that is at c1m5, and I've got to try to run through it again.

my squad

Post by william19k »

So far my only squad has 2 veterans and 2 regulars, I was raising a second team of 4 as backups and had all of them to green but last night I took one of the green guys out for added firepower to my squad and he took several large laser and cold light hits to the head before falling over and landing on his head, destroying his cockpit and the machine. So now I am at 4 light titans with 7 Pilots between Veteran and Green.

I generally use only titans that came with the game as my attempt at importing went horribly awry as seen in a different thread :) I just look at what skills my jocks are good at and try to match them with what is available. I have only designed one light titan so far and my leader is in it. Cannons and close combat.

I have fought mostly all random battles, first against weaker inferior forces to try to hone my squad and then against balanced equally skilled forces but as yet have not taken them against better skilled jocks. I am guarding them like a hen guards its nest. If someone dies I dont reload or anything but i try to stack the bets in my favor until I feel my confident in my jocks.

I have just beaten the second mission in the savanna campaign which is where my green jock bit the bullet.

My squad is still at the bottom level. Campaign seems to hard. Don't get me wrong. I'm very excited about the game and know I'll like it eventually but its getting harder and harder to convince myself of this.
Should I try the missions first?

Have played 1 squad from scratch, so far, no deaths... yet.

4 Regulars, still in light titans

One specialized solely in GM, two using energy weapons (1 for firepower and 1 for special effects - BR gun and starting into UGM), and the last is CC and working on Cannons.

am nearing the end of campain 2. Play 2-3 random battles for each campain battle on average, but tend to do spurts of 2-4 campain battles in a row.

Played around some with a special squad for testing designs, but does not have the same feel as being pilioted by a 'real' jock.

Have spent almost as much time in the factory as on the battlefield.

Tip for players who do find the first campaign to hard to beat :

1. Download the campaign for *real* beginners from the forums map section.
2. Play a random battle with opposition at lowest rank and give your team the weight advantage with the balance button.

Actually, I, so far, haven't found the campaign too hard. I can beat almost any map I've seen by the third attempt, at most.

No, what gets me, is my lousy memory.

This game is, to a degree, luck based. And being luck based in any fashion, something will inevitably go horribly wrong. Which is why you save every now and again.

Now, if only I could REMEMBER to save every so often, I'd be doing ever so much better at this game.

Pretty much exactly this for me, except 1 GM and 3 Energy, all with CC.
