Game Woes [fixed]

Post by Hellen_slith »

Now I'm getting an error message to the effect, "Cannot run program b/c missing a Steam file".

I don't want Steam. I did not buy the game through Steam. I have a physical disk, from which I reinstalled the game, then I updated to the latest version, and it should run w/o Steam or anything to do with Steam.

Additionally, I cannot log in to my server game, says "Server Error"

This just gets more frustrating day by day.

Delete the game. Then DL the .21 version from the member section of the forum. Install and then DL the last patch.

Hey there Brian, my friend. Good to hear from you. I notice that you say "delete" the game instead of "uninstall" the game and I'm curious as to why. Not uninstalling the old game may leave remnants behind in the form of orphin files in the file structure, ancient, unreferenced entries in the registry, etc. It will leave your system less than pristine. It's not a major problem as far as I know, just....it's inelegent. If I was 40 years younger I would fix things like that on my system but since it's of little consequence, and I've got close to a terrabyte of space still to use yet, I don't much feel like the perfectionist I used to be. A "beer and pretzels" approach will do just fine.

Yes, to fix, it was uninstall, and then apply the ver. 20 of the game (which is a fresh install). Same issue I first had when trying to get the game to patch, remember that? HAHA. I am so stupid. Anyway, now,

I am running version .20 now, and have not applied the .21 patch. I figure, if ain't broke, don't fix it.

Not sure what the .21 patch does, but it is running fine for me now as .20, so I'm not going to press my luck!!

Only other thing I had to do was copy the /scenarios folder that was in programs/x386/matrix/TOAW directory to mydocuments/mygames/toaw and it works fine now. Will apply .21 patch only if necessary.

Yeah, but can your game engine version read version .21 files? And can your opponents running version .21 read YOUR files?

I'm not sure yet ... so far, my server game is running fine (which we started when I had version .21) ... is still going w/ my version .20 and we have exchanged moves w/ no problem so far.

I will check on my email games next (they were also started under version .21) .... I still need to physically move the "new" Win7 machine to a more comfortable chair that is in another room before I get too much more deep w/ the testing .....
