Why do they appear and attack my continental colonies ?

There are also "Space slugs" that mostly inhabit asteroid fields. Perhaps your continental colony passed close to some of them along it's orbital path.

Sand slugs inhabit desert worlds because they eat the silicon found there. There shouldn't normally be any silicon at continental planets. Unless you are playing with a mod that alters the normal planetary resource distribution?

Only desert worlds, especially with a valued resource. I've seen them attack other planets with a close proximity orbit. Sure it wasn't an ardulus or whatever? Sorry I can't help.
