Maritime Bombers

How do you attack a submarine with a maritime bombers or use one to defend your convoy hexes? Can they spot them from there base or do the have to fly out, spot, and attack if they have the range? Maybe they only can attack enemy Convoys? Do they do this in the background during the opposing player's turn? I am thinking about the Canadian convoys and Iceland.

You operate them yourself,If no u boats are visible then you can select a hex along your convoy route and fly a recon mission they have a good spotting range, If enemy naval units ate visible then just directly attack them, I usually use them with my naval units to hunt and drive away ore destroy u boats,Upgrade them when you can they have very long range.
