Game keeps crashing on the end of the turn

Post by IcyFire101 »

Hi!

I'm currently playing 2 Campaigns against the AI with the Focus Pacific Mod, and although I am over a year into my allied campaign without any problems. My Japanese save will always end up crashing, after around 10 or so turns. It's always at the very end of the combat replay when the 'Upgrading Aircraft' message shows. I figured its probably a faulty airgroup that is crashing the game to my desktop. But i'm not sure how to go about fixing it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not a tech, but when you do open your turn does the combat log look to be complete?

When it "crashes" it doesn't ask for Player 2's password, and so you have to open your turn from the main menu?

You may need to greatly increase the memory space allocated to this game.

Hi! thanks for the reply :)

I am not playing in a PBEM, just against the AI. The turn runs great all the way up to the final 'upgrading Air groups' Stage.

And once it crashes it shows no error just closes the game and that's it. I have found a temporary annoying fix when if I keep the game tab minimized when that stage is being processed it fixes it?! And I can then play the next turn. However after a few days the same crash will happen at the same stage.

Sounds like a memory problem. Why don't you post this in the main forum? There will be people there who've run into this and know what to do. The Tech forum is not as well supported.

For starters, post the specs of your computer - RAM, hard disk type and size, Video Card or Chip and Video RAM, CPU, and approximate age of the computer (affects the motherboard features available). All this stuff can be found in the "My Computer" section.

Another thought - sometimes a crash during execution of a specific step in the game means that the data for that part of the program was corrupted during installation. In those cases a re-install of the program will likely fix the problem. Don't worry, re-installing the program and patches/Beta will not overwrite the saved games you already have!
But if you already have played with altering the map (extended map or stock; stacking limits map or not; map art) and the artwork for ship and aircraft icons and units you should save those directories in a reserved directory on your hard drive so you can copy them over to the re-installed game later.

My PC's specs should be fine, it's a pretty modern PC. Is there a way to allocate more RAM? I shall post this over on the main forum as well and see if anyone can help. Never had the game crash before on vanilla WITPAE. So i'm guessing it must be something to do with the mod i'm running.

It doesn't sound like a memory leak issue to me.

Memory leak builds up over time and can be completely corrected by a reboot.

A crash from a memory leak wouldn't happen until many many turns had been run consecutively in a single session.

Shutting down, rebooting and loading the current save should clear all memory leak issues.

BB is right, you should reinstall and patch the game again. Check and show us your switches.
Especially the CPU switch.

How it is configured to run is critical.

As for the Mod:
Focus Pacific is a difficult and expanded database scenario in several variants.
It was designed for play by e-mail. It pushes the game engine to the max.
It does not just have the kitchen sink; it has several kitchen sinks.

If it is a database error that only appears during a turn execution it would most likely have been discovered by now unless it is triggered in some way by a player input.

As an example, I have found database errors in AndyMac’s Mountbatten’s Folly scenario that will crash the game.
Took me about two weeks to sort them out. Database errors can crash the game. Those errors were only triggered by player input.

I have reinstalled and patched the game to no avail unfortunately. I use two different Exe. Files for the turn phase and the orders phase, as I have had problems with the game lagging during the night phase in full screen or seeing my desktop whilst in the order phase.

"C:\Matrix Games\Focus Pacific\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -w -px1920 -py1080 -deepColor -altFont -skipVideo -cpu4 -dd_sw - These are my turn phase switches

"C:\Matrix Games\Focus Pacific\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -skipVideo -fd -px2560 -py1440 -altFont -cpu2 -deepColor - These are my Orders Phase switches

Thanks.

Interesting. How does that work?

You go into the game and enter orders in full screen with 2560, 1440 res and then save and exit the game.

Then you go back into the game in window mode 1920, 1080 load the save and run the turn.

Then you save and exit the game again and repeat the process.

That works fine for ten turns and then the game crashes on the last turn save.
I think I would crash as well.

You do the same thing for your Allied game and it runs fine.

Which scenario?

In the Allied game scenario 71, 72 you have the Allied Aircraft Purchase System?

If you are running scenario 71 or 72 as the Japanese a difference is that the AI has the Allied Aircraft Purchase System which it can’t use. It runs the script if it can get the aircraft.

I have never used that system but it does have a release cost for aircraft.

I’m stumped.

Being able to see your desktop through the game screen is called bleed-through. I have forgotten the precise fix for that but it requires a box to be checked in your Windows settings (not the game settings). Back when Win 10 first came out it was discussed as a common problem, if you can find that thread.

I don't know why you would use two different CPU settings to run the game, but I would not use CPU 2. As I understand it, CPU1 is used mostly by the OS (Windows) and CPU 2 could be used by other background programs like an anti-virus. CPU 3 or CPU 4 should be free for the game but use the same one for both your setups in case it makes a difference in executing the game save data files.

A lot of players have posted that they need both the dd_sw switch and the deepColor switch to cure some of the delay issues. It wouldn't hurt to try that if you have not already done so.

As for the night phase, I also experience some slowdown which I put down to the darkness overlay that is added to the map. I haven't found a way around that yet.

Why not? It works just fine. I have used it before. Different switches for turn execution and order input. I get less graphics glitches that way.

Plus, full screen for turn execution and windowed for order input makes like better.

I notice you're not using the -dd_sw in your orders phase which utilizes your full resolution without problems. Use SeaBee (see my signature) and try the following configuration:

Image

Try turning -SingleCpuOrders on/off, as well as -dd_sw and try to use the large screen size for the entire game. Windowed mode is preferable to fullscreen. Look in the stickied threads of the Tech Support subforum, I also wrote a guide to use "fullscreen windowed" (i.e. borderless windowed) mode if that appeals to you.

FYI, when you use SeaBee to create a shortcut, keep it running when you try to run the game. If something goes wrong while running the game, you can exit and quickly make a change to the setup in SeaBee, then quickly create another shortcut. It will overwrite the old one. Rinse and repeat until you get the desired results.
