RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A)
You mentioned you might try to take Saipan at some time in future because the garrison looks weak. Don't forget that it has a major Naval Fortress with beaucoup guns by now. You will need some good gunships backing up your landings.

And/or lots of bombers softening up the target. Then maybe paratroopers to ignore the big guns.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

Actually, Saipan is the only base that does have a few infantry units. Having played Japan a bit I always want the Allies to try out Truk, Saipan, Wake.
I'm loading for Tinian, but Saipan will just be left for now and suppressed. With Guam as a main base I can hit it and it can't be resupplied with Pagan and the rest taken up in the North. I don't want any of these BBs damaged and out for months for a base that doesn't matter anymore.

RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A)
Good plan. My first game I tried to take down Saipan with BBs, thinking their big guns would devastate the fortress. The reverse happened and the BBs were shot up badly (no danger of sinking) as you predicted. Then I learned how to get the BBs to stand off at least 15K yards and the fortress hit next to nothing. So you can use BBs and CAs as well as bombers to suppress Saipan.ORIGINAL: obvert

Chinese in the process of taking Guam? [:)] That would help their current day strategic situation.

I know. Crazy.
Only a handful of units that can beought out from China though. Once I take back Peiping and Kalgan the Chinese will just be sitting around as garrisons, building forts and fields.

Another good turn. The IJN comes in for a CAP trap, but it's pretty irrelevant other than skewering a few TB and their escorts. The Okinawa bases are pounded again, losing more planes trapped there on the ground. Transports are now beginning to transition to Formosa after dropping their forces in the Central Pacific, so soon I'll load up for Naha.
Guam falls, Rota invasion is one day out and all four of the Northern Marianas are in Allied hands. Woleiai falls, and Ulithi is next. An invasion is going into Manokwari to cut off any action on New Guinea on the South flank.
In Manchuria things heat up around Chinchow with a SA against the IJA block there. Got a 1:1 but paid a steep price. This will continue though, as I'll weaken his and transition more forces in to take over, hopefully getting a breakthrough here soon.

RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A)
March 2, 1943
Subs continue to hunt for KB and get into contact, firing at DD Susuzuki, but can't connect with the CVs. This has been a problem recently, as the KB has moved through huge sub concentrations with impunity.
The 4Es found trouble in two spots today where sweeps either didn't fly or arrived late. Lost about 8 B-17E over Amami Oshima, but the P-38s swept about 15 fighters down out of 50+ there after the strikes.
At Port Arthur no sweeps flew and B-24s cut through the enemy to effectively hit the runway with only about 5 of 40+ lost. Not so bad there.
The most important current ground battle is raging daily at Chinchow along the Manchurian coastline. This is the key hex (x2 wooded) where the Allies, all Soviets now but others on the way, are trying to break through down the coast. If this hex falls the path will be more or less clear through to Korea with a lot of the Kwangtung Army caught to the North in Mukden, Changchun and various other blocking positions in x3 territory. Now that the rail is open and units can arrive quickly from China, more armor and better ground troops will food through any gap opened in enemy lines.
I've begun to rotate in units and will use the ones in the hex until compete exhaustion, in true Soviet style, to force a breakthrough. Daily attacks with accumulate heavy fatigue and disruption on Japanese troops combined with the constant pressure of IL-2 strikes and other Allied bombing efforts. I have now about 100 2E USAAF bombers in range that will begin to hit here soon.

You're absolutely right. But that will not take long! It'll be 2-3 turns at most. I can rail troops into Tientien though now which will get them on their way.

Yep. You can rail into it but not out of it or through it.

Obvert said something about the route being clear to Chinchow. I presume most of the troops he wants to move are at Tientsin where he just took the base, so I did not mention the ability to rail in troops. But it is good to add that info for newer players who may not be familiar with the rail/contested hex ownership question. Thanks Hans.

Only Chinese in Tiensien, and the troops I want to go to Korea are in SE China, coming up. I might ship some more from Takao to Shanghai as well if the hole really breaks open.

The very large and crucial battle near Chinchow has now entered a period of daily attacks which will not end until the hex falls to the Allies. I've got combined Soviet, American and Commonwealth air power of over 400 bombers taking part daily, hitting troops and exacted only tiny amounts of damage each strike, but likely boosting disruption and fatigue and using daily supply. In the combat phase a DA today gets a 1:2 but exacts a price from the defenders .Allied losses appear heavy in AFVs, but most of these losses are actually support vehicles.
Allied units are tiring, but will keep on. I'll be rotating, but will likely incur some overstocking penalties as well in the next few turns. Fresh units will arrive to take the lead though, and it seems the IJA now doesn't have much reserve here. A lot of units are tied up in nearby hexes and bases, holding the lines there.
Elsewhere, the AP/AK amhpib TFs recently involved in taking the Marianas are shifting to Formosa to pick up troops for an invasion of Naha and Amami Oshima. I'll hit Amami even though I don't plan to drop enough to take it outright. If he has to worry about that one so close to Kyushu it'll be harder to support Naha. I'll drop a brigade and an armoured brigade though, so tough units hard to dislodge.
The boost in 4E strength with the B-24D-1 is now being felt, and I can be slightly more free with them, but I'd like to keep some numbers of B-17E for the eventual closer range strikes to the Home Islands. I just need those close in fighter bases.

RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A)
March 6, 1943
Near Yinkow along the Manchurian coastline a very important battle finally achieved a result: a 2:1 sent the IJA packing and opened a gaping hole into the clear indefensible terrain to the South. Troops will now pour through, not stopping for Port Arthur but heading directly for Korea.
In addition the Allied navies score some good hits between Okinawa and Amami Oshima. A big convoy is hit, bombardments degradation bases further, and subsequent bombing strikes continue to take out more planes on the ground.

Finally!! The IJA folded and ran near Chinchow and the floods of Soviet troops will now pour through down the Mnchurian coastline toward Korea. I have waves poised and ready including a Marine ID and some Allied armour. This is a huge moment and it will determine a lot of the rest of the game how much this hole can be exploited. At Anshan next door I've got a blocking force so the LOC cannot be interrupted. I'll sit most air strikes now and just move up.
Some naval strikes hit troop transports near Tokunishima off of Okinawa. This is a contested island I took via paras and the IJA paras took back. Two of the three stuck near here though and are now becoming viable airfields to cAP TFs moving forward. Amami Oshima is the main target. This base is key and will win the entire area if conquered.
Guam and Tinian will fall soon in the Marianas, leaving only Saipan to be reduced slowly and starved out. I'll not take on those guns for no reason.

Here is the plan for Korea. The Manchurian part should be simple, as most troops are caught in Changchun, Mukden, and other blocking locations.
The arbor will move as fast as possible to take Genzen. This base is key as it cuts the rail on the Eastern side. Then they're going to head down the eastern coastline to get South of Keijo, into the small clear territory bases in the South, but also open the door to the infantry moving through Keijo. I hope to be at Fusan by April. [;)]

A bombardment TF supported by LBA but also distantly guarded by the KB hit Tientsin during the night. He knew some cruisers were laid up here and took a shot. Luckily damage was light all around. This does set up some interesting scenarios though, and I'll send in surface forces to both hunt the KB and the retiring BB led surface force. I may also set some LBA strikes as I now have a level 9 field up here with a lot of support. Tomorrow could be interesting.
Kingfishers are set for low naval attack in several bases, and this turn bombed a transport at Tokyo Retto.

RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A)
So while that looks very encouraging, this is one of the final images from the combat, and as you can see very little was accomplished here. I'm starting to have the feeling the KB has a level 9 shield around it. Very frustrating, especially after the solo Yamato run in that sent down the Lex.
Another thing to note here is that this is not even a night battle!! This is morning! And this got to 6k yards without any of the big CVs taking a large caliber shell hit. [:-] [:@]
I'm also very unsure how the IJN got away if the Allies still were shooting and all Allied ships outpaced the slowest IJN ships by at least 8 knots. [8|]
