Balance comparison between WaW and WiE

Post by zzmzzm »

I really like this game, and bought WiE several days ago. Now I made a balance comparison between WaW and WiE from Allies player's view .
1. More than half of new units of Soviet can survived in 1st turn of Barbarossa in WiE. Not in WaW.
2. Soviet need to defend the Far East in WaW since Japan can defeated China easyly. SU need not defend the Far East in WiE.
3. Units have same action points in two game, but the map of WiE is much bigger. This cost German more turns to take big citys of Soviet.
4. German can put only 1 chit into inf and armor tech in WiE, but 2 chits in WaW. So Soviet will defend 3rd tech level armor of German in 1941 July in WaW. In WiE German can only have 2nd armor tech at the same time.
Conclution: If it is balanced in WiE already , then it is not in WaW. Or the opposite.

WiE is balanced much better overall - but it also had more time to achieve this.

I have now tried both SC - WiE and WaW.

I must say I get more pleasure out of WiE due to the larger map scale and more varied tactical opportunities without the clustering. Of course clustering and traffic jams were realistic, but I think WiE models it realisticly enough. But on the other hand I like WaW for the world theater impacting everything.

I wish there was some way to combine them both, maybe with the WiE European theater map and even less detailed Pacific theater map (like currently in WaW) would be enough for me. Or heck, I wouldn't really complain of a whole world map on WiE scale, that would probably make the greatest/funnest WW2 strategy game in history imo.

I moved from WiE to WaW and never regretted it. Of course WiE was a great game, but WaW is even better. I played many EMail games in both and the balance in WaW is just right now. I won as Axis and Allies and also lost both sides.

I like the restricted research of WiE and less units per hex. Maybe there should be lower unit limits in WaW?

I have played about 10 PBEM games , has never lost one of them. But I think if I played as Axis against me as Allies , I will win as Axis.

If the scale in WaW were like in WiE, I would agree. But playing WW2 in Europe, especially the epic war in the East, is so much more fun in WiE because of the scale.

So we need a 2x scale WaW? Where do we sign up?

I think I remember Hubert and Bill have said somewhere that a 2x scale WaW map as such isn't possible. But seeing how many hexes of the map are kinda wasted in the northern part of the map due to the Mercator projection, I think a solution could be to allow for some more map distortion where the main theatres are made bigger than they are now at the expense of "empty" regions.

Anyway, I also think that the map for the next game should have the easternmost hexes bordering the westernmost hexes so that we can scroll infinitely in each direction and don't have a US that's split down the middle.
