Is it smart to buy games in boxes?

First of all I love games in boxes a lot. I have in boxes ARMA, Combat Mission, Hearts of Iron, Total War series and much more. From almost 30 Matrix games which I own just 6 of them are box editions. I would like to buy some more Matrix boxes, but I started thinking if it was reasonable. Since Steam, GOG, GamersGate and other digital games sellers are appeared you almost don't need any DVD to play games and many DVD don't work on Windows10 and so on. To buy nice colour boxes for collection? To buy for sale? A lot of Matrix games boxes even have no printed manual inside. What is your opinion and experience?

For me, no more boxes, the only thing I like physically is a book for reading. Still old style reader. For games, it goes digital for me.

I have lots of games in boxes on discs that I cannot use anymore since my laptop has no dvd/cd drive anymore. And they aren’t worth buying an external one for either since they don’t run well on Win 10. Physical boxes and discs are just clutter to me now. I download the install files to my external HD and they all sit there now

If you have lots of spare cash and like the boxes then why not. Personally it's an extra expense to far.

I suppose it's like me and Hardback vs Paperback vs Kindle regarding books. If it's a title I really want or part of a set I go for hardback. Otherwise I do kindle or even audible. Again though I always try to go hardback over paperback, at one time it didn't bother me but now I see how well hardbacks keep compared to paperbacks so that changed my mind. I've even gone and rebought my favourites in hardback version.

I used to but over the last 10 years or so I only do the digital games now. Cheaper, easier to store on my external HDD and store all my serial numbers there as well.

+1. Too much clutter with paper games; I'm currently in the process of selling off my remaining paper games/boxes. Can't wait to be free!

I wish that I had some of my old paper/board games. Then maybe I could have introduced some new friends to them who did not have computers. Yes, if possible I would buy the box and then add to that any additional files needed on a flash or a disc, these would be updates as well as documentation.

Maybe problem isn't with Win10 but with the disc drive? Or do you have an old computer that used to have older Windows, you updated it to 10, and now discs are acting up?

I used to like the boxes. But now they just take up room. However the proper hardback manuals are where it's at. ALL games should come with these. World In Flames, TOAW, DC:Barbarossa, Strategic Command, etc, etc.

But the king of all hardback manuals is World In Flames. Mrs W had to move into the spare room when they arrived, nothing separates me from my hardback World In Flames manuals - and the bed isn't big enough for all of us. Even if you don't buy the game - get the manuals - you won't look back....

Yeah, not understanding that either. I built my computer with Windows 10 Pro and I also added a DVD drive (Which I never use) and it works fine the one or two times I have actually used it.

I'm not big into boxes. I have moved a lot and they tend to get knickered up. So, I like this new download deal unless it is something I really want with a box and a manual!

Not anymore. There was a time before server-based game ownership where you couldn't trust the new idea to last, and so a box was a necessary security measure for your games. Now? The online or virtual game ownership has more than proven itself. It is the only way I'll buy games anymore unless there's some compelling reason for me having the boxed product with a printed manual. These are rare now and an example doesn't even come to mind.
