Could not change video mode

Post by sveint »

My screen is 3840 x 2160 pixels, apparently only 2194 x 1234 is detected? Not sure where that comes from.

Checking 'fullscreen' just gives an error.

Can I edit the screen setting myself?

I tried editing SC3.ini but it just resets to these values:

#ORIGINAL_SCREEN_WIDTH= 2194
#ORIGINAL_SCREEN_HEIGHT= 1234
#WINDOW_WIDTH= 2194
#WINDOW_HEIGHT= 1234
#BIT_DEPTH= 32
#FULL_SCREEN= 0

Please allow us to manually override the screen settings.

Hi Svient,

It looks like you are running with Windows scaling on your end, and it looks like at 175% due to the numbers that the game is showing.

For example, 3840 divided by 1.75 = 2194 in the horizontal resolution.

All this means is that although your system is saying 3840x2160, due to the 175% scaling you are actually running at 2194x1234. This is what the game sees and because of the scaling the game lists the only compatible resolutions which in your case once again, and due to the scaling is just the one resolution of 2194x1234. When you attempt to set it to run at FULL SCREEN the game does a check and unfortunately the game graphics library that I use to handle the full screen option is simply reporting that the game cannot be run at full screen.

Manually attempting to override this will unfortunately not work either as the game does a check for this and resets it to what is actually compatible. Essentially it is not restricting you, it is just letting you know what is compatible in game and for your setup, just the one resolution and again only in windowed mode.

However, in your case since it is the one resolution it should be filling your entire screen, or very close to it and visually there is then no difference between windowed mode or full screen mode in your case.

The only thing you would miss out on is potentially some acceleration from being in a proper full screen setting, but it is very minor either way.

Hope this helps,
Hubert

Thanks Hubert, I see what is happening.

Unfortunately there is still a small bug. If I click OK on Settings the game/interface resizes to use about half my screen (centered in the middle). So if I do change anything or even just enter the options menu I need to go out and manually reset the .ini file after.

I'm having the same issue. Everything is oversized and some of the buttons are off my screen. Can this be disabled so I can run on my laptop?

Unfortunately for those running with Windows scaling there is an issue with the new resolution settings setup, however this can be adjusted with a one time fix.

1) Navigate to the following folder on your PC:

C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\Strategic Command WWII - World at War

2) Open the file called SC3.ini

3) Change these lines to the following and then save and close the file:

#ORIGINAL_SCREEN_WIDTH= 0
#ORIGINAL_SCREEN_HEIGHT= 0
#WINDOW_WIDTH= 0
#WINDOW_HEIGHT= 0

4) Launch the game and it should work just fine after that.

Hi Svient,

Thanks for the info and just to make sure I've understood, you can have the game running and displaying properly, however if you then enter the SETTINGS screen and then click OK it then resizes things incorrectly?

Or is it the case that the game is not ever showing correctly?

I believe I've found the issue and there should be a fix on the way.

I used the work around and game is working again. Can you just go back to 1.03? My windows settings should not carry over to games - I have it at 150% so I can read stuff without wearing reading glasses.

Apologies again and there is a fix on the way, you may need to apply the workaround at least one more time, but after that the screen should no longer be resetting as you've found it to be doing since the v1.05.00 patch/update.
