Equipment Editor

Post by StuccoFresco »

Ok, i'd like to create a serie of scenarios with fictional countries, but I don't want to sift through hundreds of equipments to cherrypick the ones I want to use every time. A relatively short list of equipment.

There is a manual for equipment editing but it refers to TOAW 3 and nothing matches TOAW 4... It quotes an Equipment Editor but there is none in the game folder.

How do I create personalized equipment files?

I'm far from an expert with the equipment editor and the equipment database, but when I have messed it with it has not turned out well...I believe that it is important that the number of equipment slots does not change...so you can't really "delete" equipment lines without screwing up the database...but you can move equipment around, and replace whatever you don't want with a slot labelled "Empty" (or whatever).

Damn, so I'll have to manually replace every unwanted equipment with "Empty" and all zeroes, and then in the scenario editor wade through lists of "empty" anyway?

If you look at how the equipment file is structured, you can add your own sections for each country and put the equipment in those sections you want to edit.

In the equipment editor, a right mouse click allows you to move to the section you want to select equipment from, so you don't have to scroll through the entire equipment list.

Cheers

A relatively short list of equipment.
In this case, maybe you can add your stuff to the New section at the end, and that way avoid everything else.

A relatively short list of equipment.

You can also replace equipment in any section you want just by editing what is already there. If you are not going to use any of the existing equipment in the db then you can put all of your stuff at the beginning.

My advice is to look at the 5.2 DataBase, there is also a Pre-WW1 Database floating around, many scenario use custom eqp files. You can learn a lot from looking at the xml and or just loading up the scenario that uses one and edit it and look at the forces and create a new (dummy throwaway) unit and look at the new custom stuff.

There is also Bill's (cathar1244) database which lists all the equipment by country, which makes it a bit easier. I can't think of where it is posted, maybe somebody else knows.

Suppose I make a scenario with its neat units in nice formations and whatnot. Is there a way to copy the units to another scenario? Or alternatively make a copy of the scenario and change the map (size and design) via editor?

So, I can copy the scenario and then open the copy in the editor and modify map size and whatnot, right?

Neato.

Not even a need to copy it, just modify it then save it as something else. This is the 21st century!

I always fear overwriting the original so I always copy and edit the copy.

While I hesitate to suggest anything relating to scenario design/creation contrary to sPz's recommendations, Section 6.1.3 of the manual says that you can use the F4 and F5 keys (when in the Force Editor) to export/import OOBs via xml files. I haven't actually tried this, but you might want to take look.

Aye, you will have to rename the .eqp file to match your scenario's name after all.

Two more questions:

A) There is an option to "Save OOBs", but it doesn't seem to work. I select the path for the OOB file, save it, but is nowhere to be found if I try to load it, or even physically go to that folder. The OOB file simply does not exist. Am I missing something?

B) The default scenario load/save folder is the "WW II - East Front" folder. Can I change it? It would be more practical to have my custom scenarios folder to be the default one.

Seems to work OK for me, I just tried it. Did you use the F4 and F5 keys?

B) Start TOAW, click on New Game, navigate to the folder you would like to be the default. Close out of that and go to the Editor, it will now default to where you pointed it.
