one suggestion that has come out in the last few years and you may or may not be aware:
play around with your bombing altitude. AA guns have 'holes' in their altitude coverage. different guns, different holes. But once you learn where they are it isn't that you won't have AA losses so much as you will have minimum loss for maximum number of hits. Once you figure it out for a specific gun, make note as it will always be there. I've worked out a few … [;)]

You took a serious risk putting the KB so close to Rabaul. If the allies had been able to put LBA there, it could have been a perfect trap on the allied side. BUT, you clearly analyzed is correctly: they didn't (couldn't?) get the air assets in place and your gamble paid off HUGE!!!

JFB dream scenario: Jan 42 and the allies are without any CV's of consequence until Mar '43. Sure Hornet and Wasp and a couple of Brits, but you are now fully able to create 2 CV TF's that are unstoppable until Mar '43. WOW!!! And even a mini-KB out of CVL/CVE is pretty much self sufficient.

thanks for the info, wasn't aware of this. But do you really think the crap hitrate of the Kates was due to the attack altitude? The torp bombers were at default alt when they were going in and dropping torps is always at 200ft.

Yeah, carrier superiority a IJ commander usually only dreams of. Mundy had LBA at Rabaul but think about the date, there is no Allied LBA at this stage of the war KB has to be afraid of, especially as I've upped its strenght with the CVLs. I really didn't see it as a gamble, was more like a bluff on Mundy's side and I called it with a straight flush. No Allied carrier should go within 30 hexes of KB until mid/end 42 at the earliest, at least that's what I usually do as the Allied.

Thanks! I'm not going to do anything really outside the box I guess, there's no need to IMO. The goal is to inflict as much losses on the Allied while suffering as few as the Japanese, that's what I'm always trying to do. Destroying ships, destroying LCU is what counts the most. Not losing ships is what counts the most on my part, lost LCU can be rebuild, same for aircraft but ships can't.

second BB TF goes in to bombard and due to the absence of CD guns also the destroyers fired at the base doing quite some damage both to the base and the base forces there... another dozen aircraft destroyed... the full defeat in the carrier battle aside, I think trying to hold Rabaul is suizide... my airfield on Kavieng is already the same size as Rabauls and I've got Truk next to it with all the assets the IJ gets early war so Rabaul and to some extent even PM is a death trap for the Allied...

after three heavy naval bombardments of Rabaul I've thought it was ok to bomb the base with KB's air arm but it wasn't... usually I'm not bombing bases if I don't have the chance to kill enemy ships or if I'm sure AA will be light but in this case I decided to do so... while we kill a number of precious Warhawks also KB loses 7 bombers so that wasn't worth it...

with the loss of all four USN carriers and the loss of the Allied Navy in the DEI I fear this AAR is going to be a rather boring read for the next months ingame time if Mundy won't do anything special as I'm going to mop up the rest of the DEI now and then I've already achieved more than the Japanese actually achieved in WWII... goal will be to destroy more Allied shipping, more Allied land units and to build up defensive lines that will lead to even more enemy ships lost, destroying enemy land units will be more difficult on the defense, this would require counter landings... not much action so you'll mostly have to live with my rants I guess... that's the reason why we didn't hit any bombers at Batavia, they were all airborne attacking my shipping at Palembang... this is unbelievable timing, I had shipping there for a couple of days though, having CAP above them, today we send the bombers to Batavia to attack the airfield with the fighters on escort and voila, our shipping gets attacked at Palembang...

one suggestion that has come out in the last few years and you may or may not be aware:
play around with your bombing altitude. AA guns have 'holes' in their altitude coverage. different guns, different holes. But once you learn where they are it isn't that you won't have AA losses so much as you will have minimum loss for maximum number of hits. Once you figure it out for a specific gun, make note as it will always be there. I've worked out a few … [;)]

thanks for the info, wasn't aware of this. But do you really think the crap hitrate of the Kates was due to the attack altitude? The torp bombers were at default alt when they were going in and dropping torps is always at 200ft.

TB's no, as you note no issue as they always have final attack at 200 ft. I was referring to your LB (Sally's etc). I'm not sure you were using optimal altitudes at Singers or Palembang.
