Question on Pilot pools

Post by awaw »

Newbie question here:
I noticed there are fighter & bomber pilot pools.

1. From which pools do FB squadrons (eg nick) draw their Pilots from?

2. Will there be a xp/skill hit when one draws a pilot from these pools? (Like in the scenario when I assign a bomber pilot to a fighter squadron)

Thanks in advance!

1. N/A.

The Pilot Replacement Pool is not split into anything. None of the pilots there are named, they are all generic 0s and 1s.

The Pilot Reserve Pool has named pilots with their last aircraft type association. You get to pick them. FB units share the same mission capabilities as F units (see s.7.2.1.2.1 and s.7.2.1.3.1 of the manual). The pilots are therefore drawn from the same source.

2. Individually selecting a pilot with a different aircraft type association will result in a small experience drop.

ad 1.

Fighter bomber pilots, if removed from an air group to the Reserve will show up in Fighters reserve pool.

(Tested in the Downfall scenario on October 15, 2013 – in Tarakan, there are British Beaufighters units, pilots released from the units show up in Fighter pool reserve)

I’ve noticed the experience point hit is usually only a few.
But if you train FB pilots in one different skill to your F pilots you can find them by sorting for that skill.
Eg: if you just train F pilots in escort and strafe, but FB in low naval as well and you can sort them by low naval.
Currently playing my first PBEM, no house rules Scenario 1 as IJ.

And where you have a squadron that changes types on upgrade (e.g. Vengeance DBs to Mossies, Beauforts to Beaufighters, some RAF squadrons change from combat types to transports, etc) ...

Send the pilots to reserve before the upgrade so they go in the correct pool (and then manually "get veteran"s of the right skill for the new airframe).

Unless you want your new Mosquito group to be good at ground bombing from 12k, in which case keep them.
