How to get long range?

Post by Ignoramus »

Hi there! Got the game not long ago. Great game! Heard of TOS before but never really looked into it. When I saw WS on the store, I picked it up without a second thought. Was looking for a new game to play anyway.

The first couple of times was frustrating as I got used to the turn system and the UI. Created a squad and played solely random games. Got my squad leader killed on my second battle when the engine blew under fire! Learned a lot since then and started to enjoy the game!

I started to design some titans and the first few was relatively bad. One of my first recon titans had solely lasers. 2 med and 3 small. Had no idea about heat and power management then! It ran hot and I had to stop firing quite frequently to wait on heat :(

One question - how to get a really long range titan? What is the best weapon for range with good firepower?

I like the Plasma Gun. Personal preference

You've got several choices, it's mainly up to personal preference.

GMH racks deal moderate damage at high accuracy and very long range, and are good at indirect fire. They can be defeated by ECM and flares, but can't be dodged well. Hot targets are easier to hit, so team up with a napalm-missile titan. :) Great against small, agile opponents.

LRM's do decent, though spread-out, damage at very long range and are fair at indirect fire. Countermeasures are useless against them but they're easy to dodge. Great against big, slow opponents.

Plasma guns do moderate damage at medium-long range. They don't take up much room but do a lot of heat (2ºc/second). They never run out of ammo but can be stopped by shields. Works great for lighting your enemy's hex on fire if he's sitting in one spot and sniping at you.

Gauss rifles are accurate and do moderate damage at medium-long range. They're comparable to the plasma gun in most respects, but produce about half the heat and use twice the space. Both Gauss and plasmas are great for called shots on missile-weakened titans.

Autocannon 4's do little damage but hit accurately at long range. They're good in large numbers and paired with other weapons.

Thanks intruder. I like the plasma gun too but it seems like it is the only reasonably good long range weapon. What can I complement it with? I'm thinking about a titan that's purely long range so it can pick at the enemy from afar and wear them down before they get into short range where the other squad members can finish it off! :)

Take a look at the Nevermore I posted in the titan arena (under "2 gm/energy titans"). It's probably right up your alley.
Note on it... if your enemy has shields up, fire the plasma gun first. that way if it hits the shields it can heat up the enemy titan and make the GM's hit better. Be careful you don't go into blue heat this way though, or you'll get worse to-hit odds instead. The GMH racks don't have terribly much ammo. You probably won't need it, as your enemy will likely be in GME range by the time you run out - with his shield and ecm on full blast at that. :)

A word of warning on the plasma cannons: They produce heat when damaged, up to about 2c per second once destroyed (and yes, ripping the location with the plasma gun out has the same results. Will be fixed soon, though.) That's a bit more than your average Light/Recon heat regulator can handle, and is more than a nuisance even on the bigger titans.

IMHO, gauss cannons with ridiculous amounts of ammo (45) are the way to go at long ranges. Much more forgiving in case of damage (the ammo can't explode), despite the slightly lower range and damage.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

The nevermore looks promising, coyote! I'll give it a try. Problrm is all my jocks are not worth anything when it comes to unguided missiles and indirect hit! :( - Poor squad abilities assignment on my part when I started the game I guess. I'm still using the original squad I created :) with a new squad leader of course! Guess I'll have to tweak them a bit when they rise in ranks. Thanks a million!!

It uses *guided* missiles. But in any case you'd probably better pick the weapons that fit your jocks, rather than replacing your jocks to fit your weapons.

Best long range weapons are guided missiles cause they have the best to hit percentage at long range. Next are the LRMs. All of these can hit at a range no plasma or gauss can ever reach.

I just looked at the Guided missiles and the H ones look great. Don't know enough about the E ones to make a judgement. But they look like the king weapon at least in range. Tesla bolt has most damage but a lot of heat. Lots of interesting weapons and systems. Factory is almost a game by itself.

Yes, I was referring to GMH. GME is a short range addition, both using the guided missiles skill. GMH are also pretty good at hitting fast targets. Of course you will get problems at close combat wiith GMH alone, make sure the titan will be covered. Team tactics is what does count here.

yup, and a properly developed GMH jock is a joy to have on a team.

First in a Raining Death (Light with 4 GMHH 2's) and now an Pariah, mine is flat out leveling the opposition. My favorite battle yet is when he (now in a Pariah) stood and faced down 3 Recon titans trying to cross lava to get to him. Kept knocking down a Banzai as it stood in lava. Eventually it shut down, then exploded. Then he turned on another and polished off a leg before the last one closed to close combat range. At which point he punched and kicked the last one to death.

Classic.

He consistantly gets more combat XP's then anyone else on the team. He also tends t get slightly higher OXP's as well, by about 100 or so. To make up for it, he only gains, on average, 150 movement XP's a battle.

Still, his guided skill approaches 70 atm, and his indirect is in the high 50's, so he pretty much hits what he aims at. Which is all that matters, really.

It seems that my missile titan. A porcupine seems to chalk up the most kills. Is this normal for the missiles to kill more often? Also is it a kill that gives you the bounty money at the end game screen?

My missle titan jocks always get the most kills. But may depend somewhat on playstyle.

and yep, the kill is what gives you the bounty.

Bounty is for *jock* kills, not titan kills.
