Inability to save campaign at Briefing Screen a major flaw

Post by pfg1701 »

The inability to save games at the Briefing and Force Selection Screen is a major flaw in the campaign game. It’s at these screens, after completing one battle but before moving on to the next, where it’s most convenient to save a campaign. For those of us who allot limited times to game playing, it’s here where a player can decide whether they should quit for the day or whether they have time to play another round. Only being able to save during battles always requires “catch-up” on the current battle when the player restarts the campaign, and, requires the player to start a battle the player has no ability to finish. For me- a periodic game player- it makes this game far less enjoyable.

Your game is saved automatically when you continue from the Planning Screen.

I realised once a battle started I had made a mistake in my force selection, how do I get back to the setup screen without replaying the previous battle?

We will add saving at that point to the todo list.

Hit Esc, quit the battle, then restart the saved game from the Command Screen.

Yes but we can't save before we make any operational decisions. SO no chance to try something different and pick something else. That's to restrictive and feels more like a roguelike game at that point.

The issue is lack of convenient player control over saves.

I recommend:

1st: Player ability to manually save at any point in the game. Automatic saves are always a good backup, but automatic saves by nature occur at the point the program chooses, not the player.

2nd: Have the Save Screen, at all times, open to the names of all the files in the save folder. As it is now, the save screen during most of the game only opens the name of the last file saved. When I play, I like to replay various aspects of the same scenario to see the result of different decisions. That requires remembering the names of all my saved files. I understand that some players like a “no-redoes” difficulty level. But this should be an option, not a requirement.
