Of course, you don't need bird wings to fly. But nobody thinks about mosquitos when they think of majestic and free soaring. [:D]

No, they do not. Almost everyone thinks of bloodsuckers, parasites, and diseases. Some might even think of DDT.

And thinking of mosquitoes makes me worry about new sorts of mosquitoes reaching Sweden. I am perfectly happy if new types of mosquitoes wouldn't migrate further northwards.

BTW. Do you know how much use DDT currently has in malaria prevention? Not sure on how much is used now, and would like an update.

DDT saw widespread overuse as an environmental spray in the 1950s-1960s. This had some pretty catastrophic effects on wildlife. It fell into disuse for many years, but has made a comeback. Its most widespread use is as a chemical that is impregnated into mosquito nets used in Sub-Saharan Africa. Several global charitable foundations have been pushing this as a means of prevention while working on a long-term vaccine. In this application it has done quite well and environmental effects are limited because of its point-source application. It's an encouraging story. [8D]

Unless you're a mosquito. [:(]

I remember seeing pictures of DDT being sprayed at a beach - while beach goers were there. Now, not a good idea at all.

Put up bat houses, in North America also install UV light to kill that fungus that has been killing the bats.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

There is a lot a research going into safer insecticides...including an old one.
